USA WOMEN’S OLYMPIC QUALIFYING TEAM
2024 RESULTS
ANTWERP, BELGIUM • FEBRUARY 8-11, 2024
While already qualified for the 2024 Olympics by virtue of its 2022 FIBA World Cup gold medal, the USA participated in the Olympic qualifying process and used it as another chance to train and prepare. The USA went 3-0, recording wins over Belgium, Nigeria and Senegal. Belgium and Nigeria also went on to qualify for the 2024 Olympic Games out of the Belgium tournament, which was one of four held concurrently around the world (also Brazil, China, Hungary). In the opening game, Belgium had a fast start, scoring 17 points by the 3:05 mark of the first quarter to build a 17-9 lead on the U.S. From there, the Americans held the opposition scoreless until the end of the period but could not overtake the Belgians. The contest’s first tie came 32-32 at the 3:43 mark of the second period until the USA opened the fourth quarter on an 11-2 run, through 7:39 of the quarter, to knot the game at 68. The game kept getting more interesting as Belgium broke the tie and the three that followed in their favor. The final tie, 79-79, occurred with three seconds left and the USA had possession of the ball. Kelsey Plum missed a floater before Breanna Stewart tipped the ball off the miss to give the USA their first and only lead of the game as time expired. The USA easily handled Nigeria, 100-46, behind a USA personal-best 18 points from Jewell Loyd. The USA led 19-13 at the end of the first quarter. Over the course of the second quarter, the red, white and blue steadily built upon that margin and took a 51-20 lead going into half- time. The Americans would outscore the opposition 32-7 in the second stanza to have control of the game. Closing the tournament with a 101-39 win over Senegal, the USA was led by Rhyne Howard (25) and Napheesa Collier (22), who combined for 47 points. The game featured six early lead changes before the United States took control thanks to a 9-0 run in the first quarter. Senegal led 9-8 with 6:38 to go in the period. The U.S. would lead 17-9 just over two minutes later.

USA WOMEN’S OLYMPIC AND PRE-OLYMPIC QUALIFYING TEAM 2020 RESULTS
BELGRADE, SERBIA • FEBRUARY 6-9, 2020
While already qualified for the 2020 Olympics by virtue of its 2018 FIBA World Cup gold medal, the USA took part in the Olympic qualifying process and used it as another chance to train and prepare. Recording 33 assists and 48 points off of its bench, the USA defeated 2016 Olympic bronze medalist Serbia 88-69. A’ja Wilson had 16 points and seven rebounds, Skylar Diggins-Smith finished with 15 points and Brittney Griner contributed 14 points and six rebounds. Jumping out to a 36-10 lead at the end of the first period, the USA controlled the game from start to finish in a 124-49 victory over Mozam- bique. By halftime all 11 available U.S. athletes had scored, and ultimately the USA was led by 24 points and nine rebounds from Nneka Ogwumike. Additionally, Chelsea Gray tallied 12 of the USA’s 41 assists. It took nearly all 40 minutes for the USA to earn its 76-71 victory over Nigeria. In a game in which the United States trailed 57-50 heading into the final quarter, Griner led with 18 points (7-9 FG). Gray added 12 points and a game-high seven assists, Ogwumike added 11 points and Katie Lou Samuelson tossed in 10 points, including two 3-pointers in the fourth. Down 63-55 with 7:22 to play, the USA mounted a furious comeback, capped by two free throws from Samuelson, posted a 15-5 scoring run over five minutes to pull ahead 70-68. Tied at 70, Wilson scored off a feed from Sue Bird with 1:06 remaining in the game to push the red, white and blue ahead 72-70. Nigeria’s Atonye Nyingifaegia made one of two free throws to close the U.S. lead to one with 54 second to go, but Griner scored to cushion the USA lead to 74-71 with 41.4 seconds remaining. Nigeria missed two would-be game-tying 3-point shots in the closing seconds. Ogwumike was voted MVP of the qualifying tournament. Joining her on the five-member all-tournament team was Wilson.

USA WOMEN’S OLYMPIC AND PRE-OLYMPIC QUALIFYING TEAM 2019 RESULTS
BAHIA BLANCA, ARGENTINA • NOVEMBER 14-17, 2019
The USA Women’s National Team was delayed in arriving in Argentina, and was without coach Dawn Staley due to the timing of the tourna- ment, but that did not stop the squad from rolling up three victories over a four-day span. After starting slow, the USA found its stride one minute into the second quarter and marched on to earn a 76-61 victory over Brazil to open pre-Olympic qualifying play. Sylvia Fowles, who made 10-of-11 shots and secured six rebounds, and Chelsea Gray, who drained 8-of-12 shots including 4-of-5 from 3-point, each accounted for 21 points. The USA was impressive in a 91-34 win over Argentina. Diamond DeShields scored 13 points, Fowles tallied 13 points and seven rebounds, and Nneka Ogwumike had 12 points. The game marked a special homecoming for Diana Taurasi, whose parents immigrated to the United States from Argentina, and the family returned for a year when Taurasi was 13. She last traveled to Argentina to play for the 2000 USA U18 National Team. With a 104-48 win over Colombia, the U.S. finished its FIBA Olympic Pre-Qualifying slate with a 3-0 record. A’ja Wilson led the USA with 23 points and nine rebounds; DeShields, who also grabbed nine rebounds, and Arike Ogunbowale both scored 17 points; and Kelsey Plum finished with 10 points and five assists.

USA WOMEN’S OLYMPIC AND PRE-OLYMPIC QUALIFYING TEAM 1980 RESULTS
VARNA, BULGARIA • MAY 5-12, 1980
Twenty-two countries participated in the event that would determine the five countries to qualify for the 1980 Olympics. The Soviet Union did not compete in the Olympic Qualification Tournament, having qualified for the Games as the host country and as defending Olympic champions. The American women posted an impressive 6-1 record to finish the tournament as co-champions with Bulgaria and establish themselves as an Olympic favorite along with the Soviets. Bettering their opponents by an average victory margin of 17.7 points, the USA’s lone setback was to South Korea in semifinal group play, 89- 88. The USA’s list of wins included over 1980 Olympic silver medalist Bulgaria, 76-75, and bronze medalist Yugoslavia, 85-84. The USA opened play by dispatching its preliminary pool opponents Australia, 68-57, and Hungary, 109-79. In the second round, which saw the top finishing squads from each of the two six-team pools earn the title of co-champion, the U.S. tossed France aside 104-58. The American women then suffered the single-digit loss to South Korea and edged Yugoslavia by a point before closing the round and competition with a 102-66 trouncing of Czechoslovakia. The second through sixth placed teams in each of the second round groups competed in the final classification round to determine the final three nations that would compete at the Moscow Olympics. In addition to co-champions Bulgaria, advancing to the 1980 Olympics were (in order of finish) Cuba, Yugoslavia and Italy. With the USA not taking part in the 1980 Games, sixth place finisher Hungary was selected to replace the U.S. Denise Curry emerged as the team’s main offensive threat, averaging 17.8 points and 5.7 rebounds. The USA also received strong offensive efforts from Cindy Noble, 13.8 points and 6.7 rebounds, Rosie Walker, 12.7 points and 5.7 rebounds, as well as LaTaunya Pollard and Carol Blazejowski, 12.0 points and 10.7 points, respectively.

USA WOMEN’S OLYMPIC AND PRE-OLYMPIC QUALIFYING TEAM 1976 RESULTS
HAMILTON, ONTARIO, CANADA • JUNE 22-JULY 3, 1976
The first women’s Olympic basketball tournament was held in 1976, and the United States women wanted to go to the very exclusive party their neighbors to the north were hosting. There was just one glitch to overcome -- the USA finished in a distant eighth place at the 1975 FIBA World Championship and failed to earn a berth to the Games. Canada, as host country, was assured of a berth. The Soviet Union, Japan and Czechoslovakia, winners of 1975 World gold, silver and bronze medals, respectively, each took one of the six Olympic slots, leaving two entries to be filled. The United States headed to Ontario looking to claim one of those at the 1976 Pre-Olympic Qualifying Tournament with the team that would eventually capture the silver medal at the Games in Montreal. In all, nine nations participated in the tournament, and the U.S. was placed in a preliminary round pool along with France, Mexico and Poland. Ripping through its first contest for an 80-57 victory over Mexico, the USA defeated France 71-59 and closed out preliminary play with an 84- 66 trouncing of Poland. The USA and Poland, with a 2-1 record, advanced to the final round. In Group B, which included Bulgaria, Cuba, Great Britain, Italy and South Korea, there was a three-way tie atop the standings as Bulgaria, Cuba and South Korea had identical 3-1 records. By virtue of FIBA’s tie-break- ing formula Bulgaria and Cuba headed to the final round to face the United States and Poland. In round robin play, which saw the USA-Poland and Bulgaria-Cuba scores from the preliminary round count toward the final round standings, the U.S. downed Cuba 89-73 with the help of 14 points apiece from Pat Head and Patricia Roberts and 12 from Lusia Harris. In its final contest the USA clipped Bulgaria 76-75 to remain undefeated and claim the gold medal. The final 1976 Olympic berth came down to another tiebreaker as the three remaining teams held 1-2 marks in the final round. However, based on point differential, Bulgaria narrowly edged out the other nations for the silver medal and went on to claim bronze in Montreal.
