Affordable and Clean Energy (SDG 7), Responsible Consumption and Production (SDG 12)

Colloidal soft template assisted 2D metal chalcogenide nanosheets

Sean Persaud* Trinidad and Tobago

Energy and sustainable production and consumption are two of the United Nations’ most pressing priorities. In response, researchers around the world are looking for new and innovative ways to tackle these issues head on. This research proposal aims to make significant contributions to both of these goals by developing high-yield synthesis protocols for two cutting-edge materials: single-layer transition- metal chalcogenides (TMCs) and ultrathin metal sulphides (UMNs). TMCs and UMNs are the building blocks of a greener future, with applications in fields such as energy storage, catalysis, and electronics. However, despite their vast potential, these materials have yet to be widely adopted due to limitations in the synthesis process. This research aims to address that challenge, building on the results of previous studies to refine and optimize the solutions-based protocols for the synthesis of TMCs and UMNs. In the first part of the study, researchers will focus on refining the “diluted chalcogen continuous influx (DCCI)” protocol, which was developed for the formation of single-layer sheets of group IV TMCs. This will involve studying the effect of varying reaction conditions and parameters on the formation of single-layer sheets, as well as evaluating the feasibility of applying the DCCI protocol to other TMC materials.
