Chemistry for achieving sustainable development goals: zero hunger and good health and well-being Mohammad Shoeb Department of Chemistry, University of Dhaka, Dhaka-1000, Bangladesh
Chemistry can play a vital role for achieving most of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) such as zero hunger (SDG 2), good health and well-being (SDG 3), quality education (SDG 4), gender equality (SDG 5), clean water and sanitation (SDG 6), affordable and clean energy (SDG 7), industry, innovation, and infrastructure (SDG 9), sustainable cities and communities (SDG 11), sustainable consumption and production (SDG 12), and climate action (SDG 13). Goal 2 is to eradicate hunger, achieve improved nutrition and food security, and support sustainable farming. A society or country can use chemistry in a variety of ways to help it reach its aim of ending hunger. The improvement of food production and distribution systems, the extension of food shelf life through improved packaging, and the preservation of food quality and safety are all made possible by breakthroughs in chemistry. Chemistry is directly related to the creation of high-quality pesticides and fertilizers that are used in agricultural crops to produce high yields that guarantee food security while being safe for both human health and the environment. By fortifying food, which is a contribution from chemistry, malnutrition can be alleviated in populations with limited access to wholesome foods. To positively impact SDGs, the chemistry industry can provide technology for targeted crop protection agents, phosphate recovery and reuse, and sustainable ammonia production. Chemistry contributes a nation not only in food security but also in food safety. Goal 3 speaks of ensuring healthy lives and fostering wellbeing for everyone. Sustainable development depends on encouraging well-being at all ages and ensuring healthy lives. To achieve the objective of good health and wellbeing, chemistry is essential. The development of chemistry has led to Medical advancements and technologies give us a better understanding of how illness and dangerous chemicals in our food, water, air, soil, and environment compromise human health. Chemistry makes a significant contribution to medical diagnosis and drug discovery, which helps people live longer and healthier lives. New approaches to lowering pollution and its effects on human health are made possible by chemistry.
