Keynote, Clean Water and Sanitation (SDG 6), Climate Action (SDG 13)
Better Living: adaptation of clean water and sanitation with effective climate action Gloria Ukalina Obuzor Department of Pure & Industrial Chemistry, Faculty of Science, University of Port Harcourt, Port Harcourt, Rivers State, Nigeria Sustainable Development goal 6 (SDG 6) dwells on clean water and sanitation for all by 2030 which could be achieved by focusing on water treatment and supply, tackling pollution and contamination, and environmental chemistry. The resultant effect will be; readily available potable water, equitable sanitation and hygiene for all with an end to open defecation, paying special attention to the needs of women and girls and those in vulnerable situations as special educational toolkits are used. The approach will improve water quality by reducing pollution, eliminating dumping and minimizing release of hazardous chemicals and materials, reduction of untreated wastewater and substantially increasing global recycling, water safety and security. By the year 2030, SDG 6 will expand international cooperation and capacity-building support to developing countries in water- and sanitation-related activities and programs, including artificial intelligence (AI), modelling, water harvesting, desalination, water efficiency, wastewater treatment, recycling and reuse technologies to mitigate against the over 2.2 billion persons without portable water and adequate sanitation. SDG 13 Climate Action requires individuals to “Take urgent action to combat climate change and its impacts” consists of five targets and eight indicators. It aims to achieve a climate-neutral world by mid- century, to limit global warming to well below 2°C (preferably 1.5°C) compared with pre-industrial times yet maintaining industrialization. To take urgent action to combat climate change and its impacts implies improving efforts to reduce greenhouse gas emissions which continues to rise, (are now more than 50 percent higher than their 1990 level) and strengthen resilience and adaptive capacity to climate-induced impacts, including: climate-related hazards in all countries; integrating climate change measures into national policies, strategies and planning. Furthermore, global warming is causing long-lasting changes to our climate system, which threatens irreversible consequences if we do not take action now. These are achievable goals that will definitely lead to better living. Keyword: Sanitation, safety, artificial intelligence, desalination, greenhouse gas, and global warming.
