Dear Students, Welcome back! We are so glad to see you again! I am so excited that spiders have been featured in this edition of the Let’s Talk Trash! I love spiders! When I taught 3rd grade, I would always ask my students to bring in a Garden Spider. They are big with pretty yellow designs on their back, and they can often be found in gardens. When a student brought the spider in, I would go to a corner of the room and let them go. The spider would crawl up the wall and begin spinning a beautiful orb web. We would be reading “Charlotte’s Web,” and everything Charlotte was doing in the book we would then see our own spiders doing. These pretty Garden Spiders would even spin pretty zig zag designs in their webs, and we would often imagine that they were trying to write words as Charlotte did. Our spiders would go through then entire life cycle right in front of our eyes, ending with spinning a pretty egg sac just as Charlotte did. We learned that most spiders are helpful and not scary at all. My students now have children of their own and they often send me pictures of Garden Spiders that they have found. Seeing them in nature brings back fond memories of 3rd grade. The next time you encounter a spider, do not be afraid. More than likely they play a very big role in the world around them. I hope that you have magical experiences this year in your classes that you will remember to tell your own children years from now. Have a wonderful year! Always, Dr. Beck
