Practice 3
Work through the exercises together.
Task 1(a): Review solving a simple algebraic equation using the balance method. Then, go through Task 1(a). Point out that since 14 is added to the left side of the equation, 14 must also be added to the right side of the equation to make it balanced. Highlight that 18 + 14 = 32. Therefore, j = 32. Task 1(b): Review solving an algebraic equation that has a number in front of the letter using the balance method. Then, go through Task 1(b). Highlight to students that they must first add 19 to both sides of the equation. This will result in 3 f = 36. Then, they are supposed to divide both sides by 3 to get f = 12. Task 1(c): Review solving an algebraic equation that involves a fraction using the balance method. Then, go through Task 1(c). Highlight to students that they first have to subtract 11 from both sides of the equation. This will result in 1 4 g = 5. Then, they are supposed to
Tasks 2(i) and 2(j): Guide students to carry out addition and multiplication on both sides of each equation to find the unknown number.
multiply both sides by 4 to get g = 20.
Teaching Tips
Task 1 Ø
When reteaching, follow the same procedure as the examples in Learn. Use connecting cubes to introduce the concept of solving algebraic equations using the balance method. Ø Remind students that to solve an algebraic equation, we want to have only the unknown value on one side of the equation. Ø Highlight the importance of carrying out the same operations on both sides of the equation.
Task 2: Guide students to solve algebraic equations using the balance method.
Task 2(a): Guide students to carry out subtraction on both sides of the equation to solve for q .
Task 2(b): Guide students to carry out addition on both sides of the equation to solve for r .
Tasks 2(c) and 2(d): Guide students to carry out subtraction and division on both sides of each equation to find the unknown number. Tasks 2(e) and 2(f): Guide students to carry out addition and division on both sides of each equation to find the unknown number. Tasks 2(g) and 2(h): Guide students to carry out subtraction and multiplication on both sides of each equation to find the unknown number.
