Experience What’s Possible
What sets Equip Exposition apart from any other event in the industry is that it is above all a social, peer-to-peer experience. Whether you’re demoing the latest equipment, meeting industry partners, or building new business relationships, it’s dynamic, engaging, and active. You aren’t sitting back in a ballroom watching or listening. You’re in it. And Equip is in it, too. The show walks the walk to support and promote all the industries that support it. Our education arm, the TurfMutt Foundation, is investing $1 million to sponsor the TurfMutt Great Lawn of Louisville, one of the city’s most prominent downtown spaces in Waterfront Park that acts as the city’s front yard. Equip, OPEI, and TurfMutt will use this new lawn as a platform for reaching new audiences and education initiatives. TurfMutt celebrates its 15 th anniversary this fall. Since launching as an educational program to promote the benefits of the managed landscape, TurfMutt has become a global education platform — reaching more than 70 million students, teachers, and families with its message that nature starts at their back door — educating future generations about the importance of the managed landscape. Equip is a global event, too, bringing attendees from all 50 states and 46 countries to Louisville, Kentucky, every fall. Louisville has been the show’s home for more than 40 years, and remains the best place for us to operate. From our office on Main Street to investments like Mulligan’s Bark Park downtown, the TurfMutt canine agility center at the Kentucky Humane Society, and now the Great Lawn, Equip Expo talks the talk
Kris Kiser welcomes Louisville’s mayor and other city representatives to Mulligan’s Bark Park, which debuted during Equip Exposition 2023, and features a building-size mural by local artist Kacy Jackson.
and walks the walk.
These are experiences you can’t get at any other show. Combine that with our 30-acre Outdoor Demo Yard, an expanded (and sold-out) trade show floor, and cutting-edge education to grow your business, and you’ll see that Equip Expo is the best place for you to experience what’s possible.
We recognize the important role that managed landscape plays in people’s health and wellness, and we champion the role our exhibitors and attendees play in making it a reality all over the world. This year’s show offers plenty of new experiences — a new Certification Center in the West Wing for pesticide and fertilizer CEUs, a Trace Adkins concert at the KFC Yum! Center, Happy Hour in Freedom Hall, and a Welcome Reception at the iconic Churchill Downs racetrack.

Doing is Learning
Equip keynote speaker, Kevin O’Conner, host of This Old House , shares what he’s looking forward to in Louisville.
This Old House is such an established industry brand, and we are so thrilled to have you here. What do you think landscape contractors, outdoor power equipment dealers, and other industry professionals will learn from your keynote address? First, I hope they learn what profound respect I have for what they do. The people who run and make these businesses work, who show up every day, who employ and provide and get after it, those are my kind of people. I also hope they learn ways to make their businesses better, ways to get more people into these honorable professions, and learn how to mentor, grow and be more productive day in and day out. What about attending Equip Exposition excites you? Do you think you will get in some time in the Outdoor Demo Yard and what types of machines might catch your eye? I hope to get to the demo yard for sure. Ask anyone on our This Old House crew and they will tell you I never miss a chance to get into the big machines, to operate and handle all the equipment. Doing is learning, and in my case, it is also teaching; teaching our audience to try, to practice, to master. So yes, get me in the seat!

BONUS Q: What is your first memory of using outdoor power equipment?
How do you see homeowners taking advantage of backyarding trends? Do you think this trend of taking our daily activities like dining, working, and playing outside and into a yard designed for outdoor living will continue? I do think the trend will continue. If you look at big-picture demographic shifts in this country, in particular the mass migration to warmer and more hospitable climates, you realize that people love the outdoors and want to spend more, not less time outside. Those big movements are indicative of smaller movements from the formal living room to the causal patio. The backyard is the new front porch. What features are you seeing homeowners request in their yards now? What do you think they will want in the future? The outdoor kitchen is hot, and it is only going to get hotter as more products and solutions make this shift more affordable and comfortable. Patios, decks, and yards can now have fire, refrigeration, water and lighting and our living space can grow by ten to thirty percent without adding an addition or moving to a new home. Landscapers are looking to take advantage of backyarding trends and help customers maximize their outdoor living areas. What advice do you have for them in how they work with customers and learn about this trend? As much as I love the backyarding trend, the outdoors is still an inhospitable place for materials, so I think it’s important professionals are honest with homeowners and guide them wisely in
their choices. Recommending best- in-class materials and equipment that will last and perform is important. An outdoor kitchen or living room can and should hold up just as long as our indoor spaces provided they are built well and built to last. What types of conversations should landscape contractors be prepared to have with prospective clients who are renovating or improving outdoor space? In my experience, it starts with a frank conversation about budget. Many homeowners have some sense of what goes into a bathroom renovation or a new paint job but very few understand the amount of work necessary to prep the ground, properly grade, manage water, remove trees, or bury conduit. Educating homeowners early about the infrastructure necessary and the cost associated with that infrastructure will help avoid misunderstandings and better set expectations.
The circular saw was my early foray into power tools. As a kid I built a lot of things with my brothers and friends, from go carts to forts to tree houses. But even before that my dad taught us all to use the lawn mower and then the string trimmer. No doubt he wanted some help around the yard, but I loved it. Working the mower and trimmer was one of my favorite chores. Weeding, not so much. BONUS Q: How do you think electrification (and robotization) of equipment will impact the future of home improvement and property maintenance overall? In many ways it already has. The abundance and efficiency of battery- operated tools on the job site is profound and keeps getting better. I never thought I would say it, but a battery-powered table saw is not only convenient, but it also works great in most situations. And I think the trend will only continue and accelerate. Electric mowers and blowers are here to stay and get better every season. I expect the same for the larger equipment, which is perfectly set up for electrification. And one of the most intriguing additions to the space are battery- powered exoskeletons that make physical work easier and less damaging to our bodies. Most of the trades require physical work that scares off a lot of potential employees or wears down and shortens the careers of people already in the trades. Using electric and robotic support to improve the productivity and lengthen the healthy span of our workers seems like a great next step for the industry.

Certification Center Debuts
Spanish Education Sessions for Landscapers at Equip Expo Filling Up Quickly Crew leadership & turf trainings offered in Spanish, valuable CEU credits available. Equip Exposition is expanding its Spanish-language education classes. Attendees can learn how to develop foremen into valuable leaders, and turfgrass management and chemical application classes will be part of the trade show’s education offerings at Equip’s new Certification Center. “A large segment of the landscaping industry speaks Spanish and it makes sense to offer classes to help these entrepreneurs develop their skills and knowledge so they can manage their businesses more efficiently and ultimately make more money,” said Kris Kiser, President & CEO of the Outdoor Power Equipment Institute (OPEI), which owns Equip Exposition. The educational session, “From Worker to Leader: Developing Your Foreman,” taught by Armando Actis, Equipment Manager for ILCA and a Judge for the Certified Landscaping Technician (CLT) final exams, will look at developing your crew chief as a valuable leader, who successfully directs, motivates, and critiques employees while working side by side with them. Managing former peers and friends can be especially challenging, and in these workshops, attendees will learn new skills and practice them through role-playing scenarios. These sessions have proven very popular with attendees and two of Actis’ sessions are already sold out.
Equip Expo debuts Certification Center to help landscapers score money-making credentials.
Equip Exposition announces a new Certification Center to be held during the award-winning, blockbuster trade show, where attendees can take courses in weed management, pesticide application, tree and plant health management, tree/shrub pruning, and pesticide safety. Through these courses, landscapers and contractors can maintain valuable certifications that will add to their service offerings and profitability. “We’re excited to debut more than twenty sessions in our new Certification Center in the West Wing. Landscapers and contractors need to maximize their time, and going home from Louisville with CEUs and credits that can help them make more money is huge,” says Kiser Kiser, President & CEO of the Outdoor Power Equipment Institute (OPEI), which owns Equip Exposition. Equip will offer turfgrass sessions in both English and Spanish. Some sessions in the Certification Center are free and others are affordable at $30 or $50.

How ‘gamifying’ your business can improve culture and boost profits.
BY NATHAN MADER
Gamify Your Company Culture: Competition Creates Engagement Speakers: Chris Psencik, John Dalton
Wednesday, Oct. 16 C105 12:00 PM – 1:00 PM
Smart business owners don’t play games with their company. But at the 2024 Equip Exposition, business owners can learn how games can make a business more successful. Hosted by the executive coaches at McFarlin Stanford and presented in partnership with Landscape Management magazine, “Gamify Your Company Culture: Competition Creates Engagement,” will show business owners a novel idea of motivating a younger generation of employees by “gamifying” the job at hand. The panel will be one of several classes in a series of educational content sponsored by Landscape Management , all with the goal of benefiting contractors and the businesses they run. The Gamify panel, offered for the first time ever at Equip Exposition, is presented by Chris Psencik, vice president of McFarlin Stanford, and John Dalton, chief marketing officer, McFarlin Stanford. It will explain this
Bosco adds that minigames have transformed his company culture into one that people are more excited to engage in, leading to a lower turnover of employees. Psencik says employees can also create and choose the minigames they want to play, ultimately building an experience that is uniquely enjoyable to your business and keeping people invested in showing up to work every day with a positive, helpful attitude. “Through (this method), and through these opportunities, we as an organization will win, and we will be successful,” Psencik adds.
unique strategy of gamifying your business to give it a crucial level up. “Minigames are your opportunity for your team to actually create fun games around key performance metrics — that leverage what you’re trying to pull — and they’re actually engaged in it,” says Michael Bosco, an executive coach for McFarlin Stanford who has implemented the concept in his own business. Psencik says a company’s best employees are the ones who drive the business forward, and minigames are a great way to reward them, incentivizing others to participate for their own slice of the pie. When bad behavior is punished, he explains, it does little to elevate the employees putting in the hard work. Other LM -sponsored classes at Equip Exposition include topics such as building an accountable organization, creating a positive culture, using your brand to retain customers, the latest in technology and more.

3 Tips for First-Timers
Equip Exposition is one of the largest trade shows in the country, and getting the most “return-on-show” for you and your business means making a plan. Here are three tips to help you stay focused. 1. Plan your show. Stepping foot into the KEC with nearly 27,000 of your closest friends and all the new products without a plan doesn’t make sense. Before you get to Louisville, sketch out what product types you want to try, what technology you’re looking to invest in, and what business sessions will benefit you the most. The show app is one of the best ways to keep all that info at your fingertips. 2. Bring a buddy. There is more show at Equip than one person can do in all three days. (Trust us: Many have tried, and none have succeeded.) The best way to cover more ground is to bring some of your crew with you. The event is designed for networking and relationship building, and having a team on site means you can try more products and attend more sessions. 3. Wear comfortable shoes. This is pretty straightforward: You’ll cover miles and miles each day of the show, so do yourself a favor and bring your best walking shoes.

Many of these sessions are eligible for

certification credit in several states. Equip Exposition also will give back this year with a special project that helps Louisville-based philanthropy, Blessings in a Backpack. Attendees visiting the West Wing can help stuff hundreds of backpacks with meals for distribution to school kids who may not have enough to eat over the weekend at home. The event is sponsored by Hunter and the TurfMutt Foundation, and held Thursday. TurfMutt is also sponsoring Mulligan’s Garden Park, a greenspace and garden center in the middle of the West Wing that highlights the benefits of the managed landscape. Be sure
