What no one could see from the outside was that he had a burning inner desire to prove something to himself and those that doubted him. He was tired of being told he wasn’t good enough, he wasn’t from the right family, he didn’t have the right accent, he wasn’t from the right schools. He was tired of being passed over by people he was better than. He wanted the freedom to be who he was, and he used that as motivation, for himself and his men. He felt like everyone was against him, and he found a way to turn his underdog disadvantages into his underdog advantages. Since he didn’t have unlimited resources, he found a way to be resourceful. He found a way to be innovative.

He used this feeling as motivation to find a way forward. And the British never saw him coming.
