Wellness in Tough Times

 One Nebraska Extension educator placed the cards in a local café and returned two weeks later, expecting to see most of them still there. They were all gone.  Dr. Athena Ramos, University of Nebraska Medical Center, requested Spanish language cards so they could be distributed to hundreds of feedlot workers.  “Nebraska Strong” crisis counselors are distributing the cards as they provide resources to disaster-impacted Nebraskans.  Teams from Australia working in disaster-impacted locations were inspired to create their own versions of the cards for their local communities. “Since the program was running at an all-time high the first part of the year, we have been able to secure more funds for the counseling program. Keep the calls coming; this project helps so many of our Nebraska residents in staying healthy.”

Lessons Learned  The WTT team is exploring options for the “Nebraska Extension Cares” resource cards and card stands to be ordered using the University of Nebraska-Lincoln’s purchasing eShop. Faculty, staff, and the public would be able to order the resources and they would be shipped directly to those locations.  From color to font to content, the WTT team worked to make sure the resource cards were easy to read and provided the right phone numbers to connect people to the supportive resources they need.  These wallet-sized cards have proved to be a clever way to get resources into the hands of those folks who do not usually seek help. During events like Husker Harvest Days, people gladly accepted a card, which also prompted discussions around mental well-being.
