F ounded in 1971, JustDane, formerly known as the Madison-area Urban Ministry (MUM), has long been at the forefront of advocating for social justice and providing essential services to those affected by the criminal justice system. The rebranding in 2020 reflected a deep commitment to expanding its reach and impact within the community. As a private, 501(c)(3) non-profit agency, JustDane has dedicated itself to a comprehensive suite of direct service programs aimed at helping individuals and families navigate the challenges that arise after incarceration. Among its many initiatives, JustDane offers prison reentry programs that support men and women transitioning back into society after serving time. These programs are crucial as they equip indi- viduals with the resources and tools necessary to reintegrate successfully, reducing recidivism and fostering a sense of belonging. Additionally, JustDane recognizes the profound impact that incarcer- ation has on families, particularly children of incarcerated parents. The organization provides vital assistance to these children, ensuring they have access to support systems that can bridge the gap created by their parents' absence. Another innovative aspect of JustDane's mission is its community events designed to promote un- derstanding and empathy for those recently released from prison. These experiences aim to enlight- en the public about the struggles faced by individuals reintegrating into society, challenging stereo- types, and dismantling stigma. By sharing personal stories and experiences, JustDane seeks to create a dialogue that fosters stronger community connections and encourages supportive networks. At the heart of JustDane's work is a deep understanding of the societal disconnect many individ- uals face. By listening to the stories of those who walk through their doors, the organization gains CHANGE THROUGH COMMUNITY ENGAGEMENT

invaluable insights into the obstacles and in- justices prevalent in their community. This information is not only essential for devel- oping effective programs but also for edu- cating policymakers about the realities faced by marginalized populations. JustDane plays a crucial role in advocating for change that addresses systemic barriers and promotes a fairer, more equitable society. JustDane's mission extends beyond direct services; it aims to incubate innovative ideas and projects that can transform the lives of those it serves. Over its four decades of exis- tence, the organization has spearheaded some of the most creative and effective programs in Dane County, including Project Home and the Madison Senior Coalitions. These efforts exemplify JustDane's commitment to foster- ing collaboration and partnership within the community. Currently, JustDane is involved in several exciting initiatives, including a homeless co- operative newspaper and a statewide social justice advocacy organization. These projects not only empower individuals to share their stories but also create platforms for collec- tive action that can drive meaningful change across the state. The ongoing success of JustDane is made possible through the invaluable support from volunteers and financial contributors. The dedication of thousands of individuals over its 40-year history has allowed JustDane to con- tinue its vital work and adapt to the changing needs of the community. The organization is immensely grateful for the visionaries who laid its foundation and those who continue to nurture its growth and expansion.

Rise to Success: Transforming Lives through Just Bakery
J ust Bakery is more than just an educational initia- tive; it is a lifeline for individuals grappling with signifi- cant barriers to employment. Over the course of a trans- formative 12-week program, participants learn crucial skills that not only empower them but also inspire hope for a brighter future. With a curriculum derived from the National Restaurant Association’s “ManageFirst” program, Just Bakery provides training in essential hos- pitality and restaurant management areas including su- pervision, cost control, nutrition, and the vital ServSafe certification. For many participants, the journey begins with the powerful act of baking. In a fully-equipped commercial kitchen, students engage in hands-on baking activities that equip them with foundational culinary skills and foster a sense of community. Each lesson learned in the kitchen is underpinned by the prospect of academic ad- vancement; students have the ability to earn up to 12 college credits and secure automatic acceptance into the prestigious Madison College Culinary Program.
This unique opportunity not only enhanc- es their educational credentials but also opens doors for meaningful careers in the culinary arts and hospitality sectors. Beyond technical skills, Just Bakery cul- tivates invaluable experience in sales and marketing. Participants are immersed in various sales venues, collaborating close- ly with program staff. This real-world ex- perience teaches them effective customer service skills, essential for front-of-the- house operations. The hands-on training and engagement with customers not only build confidence but also prepare them for challenges they will face in the workforce. With each pastry sold and every custom- er interaction, students gain practical ex- perience that reinforces their classroom learnings.

The impact of Just Bakery extends far beyond the initial training. Proceeds from the bakery's sales are diligently reinvested back into the pro- gram, creating a sustainable cycle of opportuni- ty. This model has also enabled Just Bakery to hire graduates, providing them with the chance to give back while furthering their profession- al development within the program. By having former students as mentors and instructors, the program continuously evolves, rooted in the lived experiences of those who have successful- ly navigated similar challenges.
Changing Lives. Changing the Community.
Just Bakery serves as a beacon of hope in the community, illustrating that with the right sup- port and resources, individuals can break free from the cycle of unemployment and hardship. The combination of vocational training, edu- cation, and personal growth empowers partici- pants to envision a future where they can thrive in the culinary world and beyond. Just Bakery embodies the spirit of resilience and transformation. It demonstrates that education can be a powerful catalyst for change by unlock- ing potential and crafting pathways to success. Through dedication, creativity, and hard work, participants emerge not only as skilled bakers but as confident individuals ready to take on the challenges of life, proving that success is truly within reach for those who seek it.

Empowering Futures: JustDane’s Inspiring Youth Programs
I n a world where challenges can feel insurmountable, JustDane stands for hope for the youth of Dane County. Through its dedicated youth programs, the organisation invests in the futures of those affected by parental incarceration and those involved in the justice system, providing them with valuable support and connections that can alter the course of their lives. Mentoring Connections: Building Lasting Relationships At the heart of JustDane’s mission lies the Mentoring Connections program, which aims to create profound relationships between youth and caring adult mentors. Each week, these mentors devote their time and energy to connect with young people, guiding them through life's ups and downs. This support is crucial for youth dealing with the emotional and social challenges stemming from parental incarceration. By fostering these connections, mentors play a vital role in helping youth navigate their circumstances and aspire towards a brighter future. The impact of having a mentor cannot be overstated. These relationships often provide a sense of stability and empowerment, helping young people build self-esteem and develop crucial life skills. Positive role models can inspire youth to set goals and pursue their dreams, reinforcing the idea that they are not defined by their past but rather by their potential. If you know a child who could

benefit from this program, or if you would like to step up as a mentor yourself, reaching out to Linda Ketcham, Executive Director, is a great first step. Drive to Succeed: Unlocking Potential JustDane’s Drive to Succeed program is tailored specifically for youth aged 17½ to 21 who have faced challenges in their education and person- al lives due to involvement with the criminal justice system. This program not only offers mentoring but also focuses on educational sup- port and the attainment of a driver’s license—an essential milestone for gaining independence and employment opportunities. Understanding the hurdles these young people face, the program is designed to provide a safe and constructive space for growth. By pairing participants with committed mentors, Drive to Succeed fosters a supportive environment where goals can be achieved. Whether it’s com- pleting high school or obtaining a driver’s li- cense, mentors guide their mentees every step of the way. Reading Connections: Strengthening Bonds For parents whose children are unable to visit them regularly—particularly those at Waupun Correctional Institution—Reading Connec- tions offers a unique opportunity to bond and encourage literacy. Through this program, vol- unteers assist parents in recording themselves reading books, allowing them to send these recordings, along with the books and personal letters, to their children.
Changing Lives. Changing the Community.
This initiative not only promotes a love for reading but also strengthens familial ties, reinforcing the understanding that despite physical distance, emotional connections can endure. JustDane is working diligently to reinstate this valuable program after the disruptions caused by the COVID-19 pan- demic, ensuring that families can continue to foster these important relationships and en- courage the development of their children's literacy skills.

A Safe Haven: Healing House Transitions Lives for Homeless Families
I n the heart of Madison lies hope for fami- lies grappling with homelessness—the Healing House. Since its opening on July 9, 2019, this 8-bed facility has provided a sanctuary for those who find themselves without a stable home, par- ticularly during crucial times such as recovery from medical procedures, childbirth, or hospi- talization. Here, the ethos of community support and compassion thrives, creating a unique envi- ronment where healing extends beyond physical recuperation to include emotional and social re- covery as well.
Before the establishment of Healing House, families in need faced a daunting reality. When discharged from the hospital, many lacked a safe space to continue their recovery. Home health providers typically deliver follow-up care in the comfort of a patient's home; however, for those experiencing homelessness, this care was often out of reach. Healing House steps into this gap, offering a stable foundation where families can heal with the support of medically-trained staff and volunteers dedicated to their well-being.
10 | justdane.org
Families can stay at Healing House for up to 28 days, during which they receive round- the-clock care tailored to their unique needs. Residents are provided with three nutritious meals a day, fostering physical health, and child care assistance, which allows parents to focus on recovery without the additional burden of finding safe childcare. Moreover, case management services—facilitated in partnership with The Road Home Dane County—serve as a critical lifeline, helping families navigate the complexities of finding permanent housing and breaking the vicious cycle of homelessness. The stories emerging from Healing House underscore the profound impact of this vi- tal resource. One narrative that stands out is that of K., a mother whose circumstanc- es could easily have driven her to despair. Facing the necessity of surgery for her lit- tle girl, K. felt overwhelmed by the thought of recovery without a stable environment. However, her situation took a positive turn when a shelter social worker connected her with Healing House. In her own words, K. reflected on her experience, saying, “Within two weeks of coming here, I was able to get a part-time job and get my family back on a schedule. Healing House staff have been so helpful. I’ve been able to get back to where I was before I lost everything.” This testimony is a powerful reminder of the resilient spirit that Healing House nurtures.
Changing Lives. Changing the Community.
Since its inception, Healing House has welcomed numerous families, providing them not just with shelter, but also with the tools necessary for a suc- cessful transition back to stability. The kindness and generosity of community members have played an instrumental role in sustaining the program. Dona- tions of money, time, services, and essential items have all contributed to the nurturing atmosphere that defines Healing House. As the mission of Healing House continues to flour- ish, it stands as a testament to what can be achieved when a community comes together with purpose and compassion. The journey toward healing is mul- tifaceted, and the support offered at Healing House goes beyond providing a roof over one's head; it fosters hope, resilience, and the possibility of a brighter future.

A New Path Forward: Peer Support in Reentry
R eentering society after incarceration can feel like stepping into a world that has moved on without you. The challenges can be formidable, ranging from securing employment to finding stable housing, all while navigating the emotional complexities that accompany such a life change. Under- standing this uphill battle, JustDane's Peer Support Initiative steps in to provide vital resources and compassionate guidance to those making this journey toward reintegration. At JustDane, we recognize that reentry is not just about finding a job or a place to live; it's about rediscovering one’s identity and purpose in a community. Our Peer Support Specialists, who have walked this path themselves, offer a level of empathy and understanding that traditional support systems often lack. Their lived experiences allow them to relate deeply with their peers, fostering an environment of mutual trust and respect. This connection empowers individuals to take charge of their own reentry process, enhancing their determination and confidence. The core philosophy of our Peer Support Initiative revolves around creating a strength-based frame- work. In this framework, those seeking support find not just guidance but the autonomy to chart their own course. This empowerment is critical, as it instills a sense of pride and responsibility in par-

ticipants, reinforcing the notion that they are not merely recipients of help but active agents of change in their lives. The benefits of involving individuals with lived experience in peer support systems are well-documented. These specialists help peers navigate various common challenges, whether related to mental health, substance use, or the social stigma that may persist after incarcera- tion. There exists no hierarchy in these interac- tions; rather, it is a partnership built on shared experiences that creates a safe space for hon- esty and growth. Participants are encouraged to celebrate their successes and confront their struggles, knowing that they have someone who truly understands them beside them. JustDane provides a comprehensive range of additional services designed to complement our Peer Support Initiative. urban agriculture, our goal is to offer diverse opportunities that cater to the multifaceted needs of our participants. Housing placement and rent assistance are also crucial elements, ensuring that individuals can start anew in sta- ble environments conducive to their growth. Our commitment to employment assistance further supports individuals in securing stable income, helping to alleviate some of the stresses that come with reentry. We currently employ a dedicated team of four peer support specialists, with eight staff mem- bers certified in the necessary competencies. Each team member undergoes regular training in trauma-informed care and understands the profound import of mental health and sub- stance abuse issues in the reentry process. Our commitment to ongoing education ensures that we remain at the forefront of effective peer sup- port practices. In a world filled with barriers, JustDane stands resolute in our mission to foster healing and growth. Our Peer Support Initiative is not only a lifeline for those reintegrating into society; it

The Strength
of Connection:
A Supportive Journey from Incarceration to Independence
R eentering society after incarceration can be a daunting experience. Individuals stepping back into the world often face overwhelming challenges, as ev- erything has changed and familiarity can feel lost. JustDane understands this struggle, and through its Circles of Support program, it creates a pathway for individuals to successfully navigate their new lives. Launched in 2003, Circles of Support is a commu- nity-driven initiative that connects 5-6 volunteers, known as Circle Members, with individuals recent- ly released from prison, referred to as Core Team Members. This unique collaboration not only pro- vides immediate assistance but also fosters endur- ing relationships that help bridge the gap between prison and home. It’s a lifeline for those who might otherwise fall back into old habits and detrimental lifestyles that can lead back to incarceration. The journey begins before the Core Team Member even steps foot outside prison walls. JustDane's in- reach volunteers reach out to individuals, working with them to assess their needs and develop a com- prehensive reentry plan tailored to their unique cir- cumstances. This proactive approach ensures that when the time comes for release, there’s already a supportive framework in place.
14 | justdane.org
Once released, the Circle Members meet week- ly with their Core Team Member. During these meetings, they collaborate to set small, achiev- able goals that tackle the many obstacles faced by individuals reentering society. Concerns such as finding stable employment, securing housing, arranging reliable transportation, and combating the stigma surrounding incarcera- tion can feel insurmountable. However, with the guidance and encouragement from their Circle Members, many find the will and the means to persevere. In an environment devoid of judgment, Circle Members provide a shoulder to lean on while also holding their Core Team Members ac- countable for their progress. This blend of sup- port and accountability is crucial for fostering self-sufficiency and preventing recidivism. Af- ter all, the ultimate goal is not just to help in- dividuals get by, but to enable them to thrive independently. The length of the Circles varies, typically rang- ing from six months to one year. This dura- tion allows sufficient time for the Core Team Members to establish themselves within their communities and develop the skills necessary to manage day-to-day life without a support network. When Circle Members feel confident in a Core Team Member's readiness to stand on their own, the Circle officially concludes, symbolising a significant milestone in the Core Team Member’s journey. One of the remarkable aspects of the Circles of Support program is the encouraging trans- formation of its participants. After two years of successful reintegration, Core Team Mem- bers can take on a new role themselves and become volunteers with JustDane. This con- tinuity fosters a sense of community and con- nection, as those who have walked the path towards recovery can now support others in similar situations.
Changing Lives. Changing the Community.
The effectiveness of Circles of Support is evi- denced by the statistic that over 90% of Core Team Members successfully complete the program, thus rejoining society with hope and purpose. Community programs like this not only strengthen individual lives but also illuminate the importance of connection, compassion, and collective growth. With JustDane’s unwavering support, the journey from a life of incarceration to a promising future becomes a shared achievement, one circle at a time.

A Journey Home: Just Dane’s Way to Reintegration
Changing Lives. Changing the Community.
T he transition from incarceration back to everyday life can be daunting for many individuals. At JustDane, we recognise that the journey home is not just about physical reintegration but also about emotional and psychological healing. Our program encourages returning citizens to embrace their experiences, fostering self-acceptance and resilience. One critical aspect of successful reintegration is the development of strong social networks. Through various support groups and community events, participants can form connections with peers who share similar challenges and experiences. This not only reduces feelings of isolation but also pro- motes a sense of belonging, which is essential for rebuilding one’s identity outside prison walls. In addition to building relationships, education plays a vital role in empowering returning citizens. JustDane offers access to educational programs that enhance skills and qualifications, making partic- ipants more competitive in the job market. Whether it’s through vocational training or GED classes, education provides the tools needed for self-sufficiency and reduced reliance on social services. Furthermore, mental health support is an integral component of our program. Recognising that many individuals face trauma and emotional distress upon re-entry, we work closely with mental health professionals to provide counselling and therapy options. This holistic approach addresses both the visible and invisible barriers that may hinder a successful transition.

At JustDane, we are dedicated to ensuring that every returning citizen has the op- portunity to thrive as an independent and contributing member of society.
