J ust Bakery is more than just an educational initia- tive; it is a lifeline for individuals grappling with signifi- cant barriers to employment. Over the course of a trans- formative 12-week program, participants learn crucial skills that not only empower them but also inspire hope for a brighter future. With a curriculum derived from the National Restaurant Association’s “ManageFirst” program, Just Bakery provides training in essential hos- pitality and restaurant management areas including su- pervision, cost control, nutrition, and the vital ServSafe certification. For many participants, the journey begins with the powerful act of baking. In a fully-equipped commercial kitchen, students engage in hands-on baking activities that equip them with foundational culinary skills and foster a sense of community. Each lesson learned in the kitchen is underpinned by the prospect of academic ad- vancement; students have the ability to earn up to 12 college credits and secure automatic acceptance into the prestigious Madison College Culinary Program.

This unique opportunity not only enhanc- es their educational credentials but also opens doors for meaningful careers in the culinary arts and hospitality sectors. Beyond technical skills, Just Bakery cul- tivates invaluable experience in sales and marketing. Participants are immersed in various sales venues, collaborating close- ly with program staff. This real-world ex- perience teaches them effective customer service skills, essential for front-of-the- house operations. The hands-on training and engagement with customers not only build confidence but also prepare them for challenges they will face in the workforce. With each pastry sold and every custom- er interaction, students gain practical ex- perience that reinforces their classroom learnings.
