Telford & Wrekin Council is laying the foundations for a brighter future, creating opportunities to learn new skills, secure great jobs, enjoy top cultural activities and live in a Borough residents can be proud of. One of the most exciting projects is the state- of-the-art Telford Theatre in Oakengates, and progress is moving fast. Demolition of the main theatre hall was completed in December 2025, and construction works are now well underway. This £21.07 million redevelopment, supported by £15.5 million from Central Government, will deliver an outstanding entertainment facility for the area and reflects the Borough’s ambition and commitment to culture. Over 100,000 people are expected to be attracted to over 300 shows in the first year and the new development is set to create 12 full time jobs and a host of casual positions. • A studio theatre for community productions • A dedicated art room for creative activities • A welcoming dining area and bar Accessibility and sustainability are at the heart of the design, with improved facilities and green technology expected to cut the theatre’s carbon footprint by 90%. Oakengates Theatre Quarter The theatre redevelopment is part of the wider Theatre Quarter project, which is transforming Oakengates into a vibrant destination for residents and visitors. Improvements include new public spaces, upgraded shopfronts, and opportunities for independent businesses to flourish. The aim is to create a lively, welcoming environment that supports local enterprise and encourages people to spend more time in the town centre, day and night. In addition this project is also creating new homes, a new market and ongoing free parking will be available in the town.
The Theatre Quarter is already bringing benefits, with new businesses opening their doors. Ephesus takeaway has moved from Limes Walk into a new unit on Market Street to the delight of local entrepreneur and owner Faruk Yuksel. Faruk said: “I’m really grateful to Telford & Wrekin Council for its support with my move to Oakengates – it gives me the opportunity to grow the business further now. “Already, we’re seeing more footfall than our previous unit, attracting more customers and passers-by due to the new location.”
