• Headquartered in Calgary, AB Canada; operates as an integrated energy company in Canada & internationally • Operates through Oil Sands; Exploration and Production; and Refining and Marketing segments. • Oil Sands segment explores, develops, and produces bitumen, synthetic crude oil, and related products, and also engages in Syncrude Oil Sands mining and upgrading operations; and marketing, supply, transportation, and risk management of crude oil, natural gas, power, and byproducts. • Exploration and Production segment is involved in offshore operations in the East Coast of Canada. • Refining and Marketing segment refines crude oil and petrochemical products; and markets, transports, and manages refined and petrochemical products, and other purchased products through the retail and wholesale networks; also involved in trading of crude oil, natural gas, and power.
• In 2019, Suncor signed a $50M ACV STE NS2 contract including S4, BTP, Ariba, Fieldglass, Concur, Digital Supply Chain and IS Oil. In 2021, they added Signavioto their SAP product portfolio and enterprise-wide digital transformation. Suncor kicked off their “Northern Lights” digital transformation in January of 2020 and went live with a big-bang approach in April of 2022. Since then, they have been working to stabilize and continuously improve their SAP footprint including improving the S4 FG integration, driving adoption and consumption of BTP and Signavioadoption, rolling out datasphere, and building out a broader AI strategy and plan.
• Prior to kicking off their Northern Lights Digital Transformation Program, Suncor built out a business case and identified the need to standardize and automate (and outsource) their back office processes across finance, supply chain, maintenance, and HR to drive out $250M in costs by 2025. • This enterprise-wide initiative has been reported to the Street quarterly in Suncor’s external financial disclosures.
3 things that helped drive the strategy
• Trusted Executive Relationships – The team including Executive Sponsor, Peter Maier; Canadian leadership, Andy Canham and Kalvin MacDonald; the Core Account Team, Lisa Caruso, Roger Piquette and Blair Wheadon; and the extended account team have developed and leveraged a strong governance and engagement model to keep channels of communication open from the top down. Engagement includes bi-annual executive meetings, quarterly strategic governance meetings, quarterly performance feedback meetings, monthly operational meetings, bi-weekly joint program leadership meetings, in addition to various weekly connects both work and social related. • Post Implementation Continuous Improvement – Shortly after the two-year implementation of Suncor’s full SAP suite, the joint account team launched a continuous improvement initiative including Core S4, BTP and Signavio improvement initiatives, process improvement initiatives across procure to pay, acquire to retire, order to cash, and record to report, and net new rollouts including Workzone, Datasphere and AI. • Signavio Gamification Initiative – A joint team across SAP and Suncor IT ad Business was stood up to identify and execute on key cost savings initiatives. The Suncor individual leading this initiative challenged the various IT and Business teams to come up with an opportunity that would drive the most cost savings relative the other opportunities identified. This initiative created excitement and adoption of the tool and eventual business value including cost savings.
How SAP solved a problem for the customer?
• SAP enabled Suncor’s cost take out initiative by aligning SAP’s Finance, Supply Chain, and Maintenance (HR was covered by Workday) industry standard processes and technology to Suncor’s functional process requirements and implemented accordingly. Implementation was focused on maintaining a clean core and leveraging BTP for custom development.
