Migration of S/4HANA on-prem hosted in a hyperscaler to RISE PTO

Client Synopsis
What did they do?
Why did they do it?
• Tyson Foods operates in 4 major segments: Beef & Pork run on and old mainframe while the Poultry & Prepared divisions run on S/4 On-Prem hosted in AWS. • In January 2025 Tyson Foods signed a 5 year RISE PTO deal to migrated their existing S/4 On-Prem environment to RISE. • Their international instance will be live in May 2025, with the larger domestic instance planned for a November 2025 go-live. • RISE will be hosted in Google Cloud Platform, with Lemongrass leading the migration program.
• Desire to align with SAP’s vision and roadmap. • Lack of IT resources available in Arkansas. • Establish a target system for the Beef & Pork divisions which still operate on a 30+ year old mainframe. • Upgrades of their existing on-premise systems are long, expensive, and painful so they are using the move to RISE as an opportunity to clear up years of customization and focus on a clean core methodology.
• Tyson Foods has grown into a global protein powerhouse with over $53 billion in annual revenue. • They are the world’s 2 nd largest processor and marketer of chicken, beef, and pork. • Tyson Foods has been partnering with SAP for over 25 years – from their early days on R/3, to ECC, then on to S/4, and now moving to RISE with SAP.
How SAP solved a problem for the customer?
3 things that helped drive the strategy
Industry
• The CIO/CTO was keen to move to RISE for several reasons including alignment with SAP Roadmap and speed to innovation. • When the RISE initiative for the Beef & Pork divisions was paused we shifted focus to the existing S/4 on-prem environment for Poultry & Prepared division. • We built a financial model with significant investments from Google to migrate their S/4 to RISE with minimal financial impact to the CIO/CTO’s budget
• Close alignment with the key stakeholders and having an understanding of what matters to them specifically. Also, leveraging lower level mgmt relationships for coaching. • Built a holistic financial model that made the move to RISE a “no-brainer” for Tyson’s leadership team. • Reinforcement that this move was inevitable, the longer they wait the more opportunity would be lost (ie: AI innovation, etc)
