Digital Transformation of Australian Public Sector and Shared Services
Published in 2024/25
Client Synopsis
What did they do?
Why did they do it?
• Platform risks in their on-premise environment ( cyber, payroll, system/infrastructure, etc). • Their previous on-prem model was highly customized and expensive with Accenture and the Hyperscaler frequently charging for uplifts and change requests for minimal ROI. • RISE with SAP will allow them to deliver their shared services outcomes across the sector more easily – leading to synergy, collaboration and productivity across the state. • RISE will support NSW to offer better services and reduce costs, as well as run processes faster.
• NSW Government is the largest state government in Australia • NSW Government looks after 8 million citizens, and is the larger employer in the southern hemisphere (>400,000 employees) • NSW Government are at the forefront of Governments globally for digital service delivery for citizens and employees.
NSW Government have taken the significant step to transition NSW’s shared services platform, MyWorkZone , to RISE with SAP. The MyWorkzone Platform is one of the biggest shared services programs in Australia, used by over 60,000 NSW Government employees. The outcomes are to futureproof NSW shared services technically and functional for the next generation. MyWorkZone is set to grow substantially in the next 2-3 years also. This growth will help the rest of NSW to switch to RISE with SAP, following the success of the current setup..
How SAP solved a problem for the customer?
3 things that helped drive the strategy
Industry
• Executive engagement at the highest levels : SAP Board to NSW Cabinet - allowing strategic alignment and accountability • A well orchestrated VAT – all team members had well defined roles, managed a wide breadth of crucial stakeholders, and worked together in a seamless and cohesive manner. • Long term strategic alignment with client –long term trust- based relationship with the client, and the existence of a clear long term strategy that remained consistent throughout.
•
Public Sector
• SAP identified that a transition to RISE will mitigate key risks around cyber, payroll and system resilience. • SAP refocused the discussion on Cloud ERP developing an intelligent modern platform, with a multi-horizon roadmap and target state designed to continuously improve business capabilities. Their previous model provided none of this, • A core part of SAP’s strategy involved the potential to embed crucial AI capability into the core platform over time.
