F or many Spanish-speaking citizens, it’s hard to deal with DUI/DWI charges when they may not be able to communicate eectively or know the proper laws. Marivel Licea, counselor at Elite House of Sober Living, hopes she can educate her Hispanic clients to help them better handle the situation and deal with their emotions about the situation. Cultural clashes Licea walked into Elite House of Sober Living to get information for a friend who had been charged for drinking and driving. After talking to the employees for a while, they asked Licea if she was bilingual. She told them she could speak Spanish and was considering studying counseling, though she already had her degree in pharmacy. “„at’s when they oered me a job,” Licea says. “It was unexpected, but they needed someone quali‰ed to help meet the needs of their Hispanic clients. I took the job right away.” 16
