HEART OF THE LESSON
Horton. clatter o f tongues—the voice o f our Lord Jesus—“ Hear Him.” He speaks with God- given authority—hear His message: “ No man corneth unto the Father but by Me;” “Ye must be born from above;” “ The Son o f Man must be lifted up;” “I, if I be lifted up, will draw all men unto M e;” “As Moses lifted up the serpent, so must the Son o f Man be lifted up;” “ Come unto Me, and I will give you rest;” “I and my Father are one;” “ Before Abraham was, I am.” God wants our eyes to be riveted upon H im ; no man but Jesus only. God wants ears open to His Son’s voice. God wants hearts centered upon the theme of the Book—the atoning death o f His Son. Jesus is the center o f God’s soul-system; around Him must move all other systems, in heav en and on earth. From Him will radiate the life o f God. See Him in His radiant glory; hear His heart-soothing, soul-stirring message; make Him the center o f your life; love Him with all your heart; serve Him with all your powers. PRACTICAL POINTS (1) The bodies o f believers shall be fash ioned like unto the body o f His glory. (2) Jesus was strengthened for His sacri ficial work by the sympathy o f Moses and Elias. (3) Profane and sacred history have revealed but one Perfect Man. (4) In the Law, and the Prophets, and the Gospels, it is Jesus only. (5) Moses and Elias were good men, but Jesus is God: ( 6 ) Those who deny the necessity o f the , atonement should interview Moses and Elias. (7) Hearken to the voice of God which says “ Hear Him.”
B y T. C. I N this lesson we have an undesigned proof o f the verity o f the Scriptures. No man could ever have invented this Story. The details are o f such a character as to make it impossible o f human origin. There are many suggestive themes for the lesson. It will always be helpful to ' get a theme for yourself, around which you can gather the lessons you desire to impress. If you take “A Mountain Top Revelation” for your theme, you can use the offering o f Isaac; the giving o f the law; Elijah’s victory over Baal; the moun tain prayer o f Jesus; the scene o f His ascension and o f His promised return to the Mount o f Olives. The Golden Text gives us the key to the heart o f the lesson: '“ This is my beloved Son ; hear Him.” The past, the present and the future are wondrously blended in this incident. Here is a vision o f the unseen world; Old Tes tament saints are real ; they are living ; there is no soul-sleeping for them ; they have not lost their individuality; they are alive to the great theme o f the Heavens. Everything we know concerning God’s dealing with this earth o f ours, and every thing revealed concerning His purpose through the ages, centers in Jesus Christ, and in Jesus Christ as the Lord of glory who must die the death for sin. In the river Jordan we have the presence of the triune God—the voice o f the Father; the Spirit in the form o f a dove; the Son o f Man standing. Here we have the voice o f the Father; the Spirit manifested by the Shekinah glory; Christ transfigured. You cannot put men, no matter who they may be, upon an equality with Jesus. God sets His seal to this here. Moses and Elias are faithful saints; so are Peter, James and John, but God recognizes no hierarchy; knows no Pope; no knee is to be bowed save to Himself; no feet.to be kissed, save His. One voice to be heard above all the
