THE KING’ S BUSINESS

both Jew and Gentile are part o f Him and one also, and are therefore Abraham’s “ seed,” not “ seeds” (cf. vs. 28, 29). The one seed o f Abraham in whom w,ere all the prophecies was Jesus Christ, and in this one seed all the nations o f the earth are blessed. ---------------— Ob— ■ Testimonial. Ira N. There are many who interpret these words, “ receive the promise o f the Spirit through faith,” to mean that we receive the Spirit by simply claiming Him in naked trust on God’s promise. That is a true thought, but it is not at all the thought o f this passage. The thought o f the passage here, as the whole context plainly shows, is that we receive the Spirit, not by works o f the law, i. e., not by keeping the law of Moses, but by believing on Jesus Christ and Jesus Christ alone, through His aton ing death, for justification (cf. v. 2; Eph. 1:13). Tuesday, April 30 . , Gal 3 : 13 , 16 . Paul here brings forward still another argument from Old Testament Scripture to show that his doctrine o f justification by faith, apart from the works of the law, is the true gospel. That argument in ’a word is that the covenant o f faith was older than the law, and that the law which came in later cannot make it void, or add new conditions. Paul says, “ I speak after the manner o f men,” i. e., “ I take an illustra tion , from a common transaction among men,” then he describes the transaction. “ Though it be but a man’s covenant, yet when it hath been confirmed (or ratified) no one maketh it void (or setteth it aside), or addeth thereto.” If this is true even of a man’s covenant, and it surely is, how much more true must it be o f a covenant o f God’s who does not and cannot lie. The original promise t o ' Abraham was through faith (Gen. 15:6). There was no mention whatever o f the law, and God would not, hundreds o f years after, entirely change the conditions o f His covenant and make new and harder conditions which man would not and could not keep. Further more, the promise was not made to Abra ham alone, as some Judaizers might imply, and thus new conditions be permissible for us, but the promise was made to Abraham’s “seed” as well as Abraham himself. The promise was not made to many “the seeds,” but one “ seed” . This’ one “ seed” o f Abra ham was Jesus Christ, and all in Christ,
