He brought out a row of candles on a board. A very long candle was at one end, a very short one at the other end. Between the long one and the short one were candles of various heights. He said that these candles were to represent a grandfather, father and mother, boys and girls, and a baby— a family which had never heard of Christ until a missionary came. The missionary was represented by a lighted candle. The whole family then received the Lord Jesus into their hearts, and from that day loved and served Him. The evangelist then asked which candle the children thought repre sented the grandfather, the parents, and the boys and girls. They thought that the tallest candle would be the grandfather, but he told them: “No that stands for the baby, the young est member of the family.” Presently one boy said, “ I know why. He has the chance to shine for Jesus the longest.”

a message to the Indians
by Martha S. Hooker
N o t l o n g a g o there lived on the shore of Lake Erie a little Indian girl named Wi Yuh (We You). While she was yet quite young, her father sent her to a mission boarding-school for Indian girls. The teacher of this school was a kind Christian lady who loved her scholars and tried in every way to make them truly happy. Wi Yuh soon- learned to love her teacher very much. One day she walked up to her and said, “Teacher, I want to give myself away to you.” At first the teacher did not know what she meant. Looking steadily into her black eyes, she asked, “And why does Wi Yuh wish to give her self away to me?” “Because I love you,” answered the little Indian girl. The teacher cheerfully consented to take Wi Yuh for her own. After that all the scholars in the school called Wi Yuh “ the teacher’s girl.” One day while she was sitting by the teacher’s side, learning how to sew, Wi Yuh was asked if she loved Jesus. “ I do not,” she replied, “ but I want to love Him and be a Christian like you, but I am too little.” “No, dear Wi Yuh,” the teacher replied, “you are not too small. If you are old enough to love me, you are old enough to love Jesus. He loves you already, and says, ‘Suffer the lit tle children to come unto Me.’ ” “But I don’t know how to come to Him; I don’t know the way,” Wi Yuh replied. “You must give yourself away to Him,” the teacher said. The little Indian girl looked at her teacher in wonder and surprise. “How can I do that?” she asked. “How did you give yourself away to me?” “ I just came to you and asked you to take me, and you did,” Wi Yuh replied. “And why did you ask me to take you?” “ Because I loved you,” said Wi Yuh. “And why did you love me, dear?”
“ It must have been because you loved me,” said Wi Yuh. “Yes, dear Wi Yuh, that was just the reason. Now Jesus has been loving you ever since you were born, but you have not loved Him at all. He wants your will to obey Him and your heart to love Him.” Wi Yuh sat very still for awhile, thinking about what she had just heard. By-and-by she looked up, and said, “Teacher, if I should give myself away to Jesus as I gave myself to you, do you think He would take me?” “Oh, yes, dear Wi Yuh: I know He would. He says so "in the Bible. That is just what He means to do when He says, ‘Come unto me, and him that cometh to me I will in no wise cast out.’ He would not ask you to come if He did not mean to take you. He wants your lips to speak for Him, your feet to walk for Him, your hands to work for Him, and your whole heart to love Him. Are you willing to give Him these?” After« thinking a while, Wi Yuh came and knelt at her teacher’s side and with her help offered this little prayer: “Lord Jesus, I give myself away to Thee. I give Thee my hands to work for Thee, my feet to walk for Thee, my lips to speak for Thee, and my whole heart to love Thee. I give Thee everything. Please take me, dear Saviour, Amen.” Then she arose from her knees and said, “Teacher, do you think Jesus heard me?” “ I am sure of it,” the teacher re plied. Wi Yuh believed it, and from that moment she became a true Christian and a child of God. She belonged to Jesus! After a while Wi Yuh wrote a letter to her stem Indian father, although she was afraid it might make him angry with her. Here is a copy of the letter: “My dear Father: — I have given myself away to Jesus, and I am not afraid or ashamed to tell you of it. Your little daughter, Wi Yuh.”
