MARCH 2018

Where Are You From? A LOOK BACK ON THE POUPORE FAMILY PAST

On March 17, many of us will celebrate that fun Irish holiday St. Patrick’s Day. But did you know the entire month of March is an Irish celebration? March is Irish-American heritage month, and I can’t think of a better time to consider the importance of remembering our family heritage. My mother’s side of the family was Irish, English, and Welsh. However, my immediate family was more heavily influenced by the French side of my father’s family. Pop’s family hailed from Alsace-Lorraine, a little region right on the border of France and Germany. Here is an interesting detail about that area: Over the centuries, it has jumped back and forth between being a French and German territory. Originally belonging to France until the mid-17th century, Alsace-Lorraine was annexed by the then-German empire in 1871. It wouldn’t be claimed by France again until after World War I. Mindy did a whole genealogical study of her family and discovered we have similar family backgrounds. Her family also came from France and Ireland, but they’re mostly German. Both of our families moved to Canada when they left Europe, though before coming to America, Mindy’s family lived in Toronto, and mine settled in Quebec. During her research, Mindy learned a lot about the French and German sides of the family,

but she found trouble when it came to the Irish side. A trip to Ireland gave us a clue as to why that is. Some years ago when I was vice president of the Malone Golf Club, Mindy and I went to Ireland to celebrate the centenary of our sister club, also called the Malone Golf Club. We stayed with a wonderful family, the Lambs, and had a great time. The celebration itself was a fancy affair, with attendees dressed in evening gowns and tuxedos, and bagpipes playing as the club president and governor walked in. We also spent some time driving around Ireland. On every corner, there is a pub and church. At one point, we drove by a small building with a sign that read “Mungovan’s Pub.” Mungovan was my

mother-in-law’s maiden name, and Mindy was excited to stop and check it out. We walked in and asked if there were any Mungovan’s still running the pub. “No, they all died a long time ago,” the bartender told us. It turns out, a lot of our Irish ancestors died young. Even if there isn’t a wealth of family stories, it’s still cool to look into your heritage and genealogy to find out where you’re from. It helps you know who you are and appreciate what your ancestors accomplished. Who knows? You might even learn something about where you are today and where you could be in the future. –Dr. Kevin Poupore

Parenting Your Adult Child

When your child packs their bags and strikes out on their own, your parenting journey isn’t over. It’s just different. Regardless of their age, distance from home, or stage of life, your child still needs a parent. You may not be changing diapers or teaching them to drive, but your child still needs your support. Here are three guidelines that will help you make the transition from parenting a child to parenting an adult. TREAT YOUR ADULT LIKE AN ADULT No adult wants to feel treated like a child. They need a support system, but they don’t need help with their homework anymore. Give them space and let them feel free to explore adult life. Don’t tell them what to do. Offer guidance only when it’s wanted. Be open with them about your mistakes so they can learn from your experiences as well as their own. LISTEN, LISTEN, LISTEN You can’t correct every parenting mistake you’ll ever make. If you find yourself trying to correct mistakes you made years ago, stop. You can accomplish much more by listening to your adult child now than you can by trying to right your past wrongs. Parenting young children involves a lot of talking. Now that they are older, take time to listen. LOVE THEM Just because your child isn’t under your roof anymore doesn’t mean they don’t need love. Love from a spouse or a child of their own will never fully replace a parent’s love. Let your child know you always

have their back. Be proud of them and their accomplishments as an adult. Your love and support means just as much now as it did when you were raising them. Parenting an adult is an exciting adventure. Remember, while your relationship will change throughout the years, your child will never stop needing your love and support.

Electric or Manual? PERKS OF A POWERED TOOTHBRUSH

IMPROVED EFFICIENCY An electric toothbrush can move much more quickly and precisely than your hand alone, so you’ll be able to cover more surface area in the same amount of time and potentially remove more plaque. An electric toothbrush also discourages brushing too hard — the extra pressure on the brush will make the vibrations noisy and uncomfortable. If you’re looking for an electric brush, you’ll find a wide range of options, from SoniCare and Oral B’s standard products to Quip’s sleek, stylish subscription-based model. Oral-B’s Oscillating-Rotating-Pulsating Power Toothbrush line recently became the first electric toothbrush to receive the ADA Seal of Acceptance. Most electric toothbrushes are rechargeable and have removable tops that you can change every few months as the bristles start to wear. So, what’s the bottom line? If an electric toothbrush gets you to brush more often and more effectively, it’s the right tool for you.

TIMED BRUSHING Most electric toothbrushes have timers, which encourage you to brush for a set amount of time, usually two minutes. When you press the power button, the toothbrush begins to vibrate and will continue to vibrate for two minutes. This feature takes out the guesswork and makes it easy to brush your teeth for the recommended time. For children who try to get out of brushing at every chance, the timer can turn brushing into more of a

You know brushing your teeth for two minutes twice a day is essential to maintaining your oral health. What’s open to more debate, though, is which tool is better at cleaning your teeth: manual or mechanical brushes? The American Dental Association (ADA) states that both manual and powered toothbrushes are effective at removing plaque. But other clinical trials suggest positive results for people who switched to electric brushes. When the ADA surveyed 16,000 patients who’d replaced their manual with mechanical brushes, over 80 percent reported improved oral cleanliness. While the debate has yet to be settled, you might personally enjoy some of the added features of an electric toothbrush.

game and less of a chore. MORE COMFORT

If you have arthritis or dexterity difficulties, an electric toothbrush's ability to vibrate on its own removes some of the pressure from your hands, making brushing a more comfortable and manageable experience.

WHY MUSCLE PLIABILITY IS THE NEXT WAVE IN HEALTH AND FITNESS

FAD OR NEXT BIG THING? We’ve all seen the waves of new health and fitness regimes that will change your life forever. With a lot of trainers moving toward this approach, it’s easy to be cautious about whether or not this is the right path for you. Pliability is not just a specific workout plan; it’s also a great workout companion. By adding pliability to your workout regimen, you can enhance recovery and limit injury. It’s the perfect add-on to your program. It helps you push your body further while mitigating long-term complications. Plus, who doesn't love a massage after a workout?

Muscle pliability is all the rage in modern strength and conditioning training. This method of training has recently been made famous by athletes like Tom Brady, but it’s applicable to all levels of training. The concepts are very basic, the workouts can be done anywhere, and it benefits a variety of training goals. WHAT IS MUSCLE PLIABILITY? Muscle pliability is the lengthening and softening of your muscles. The long-standing belief in strength training is that lifting weights is the path to strong and healthy muscles. While you will get bigger by lifting, it also makes your muscles shorter and tighter. This increases the likelihood of an injury. Training for pliability elongates muscles, making them softer and less easy to strain. HOW TO TRAIN FOR IT Training for pliability is simple and can easily be integrated into any workout plan. Pliability workouts use resistance bands and foam rolling to train your soft tissue. The intensity of the training is at your discretion and can be as minimal or intense as you like. Training is usually accompanied by some form of massage to help prevent buildup of lactic acid and muscle tightening.

Flower Displays

EARTH’S MOST BEAUTIFUL Spring is here, which means flora will soon be in full bloom. Flowers can be an easy pick-me-up or a great way to add color to your home, but some people take their flower obsession to the next level by planning botanical-themed vacations. Here are some of the most impressive gardens and flower displays in the world. NETHERLANDS Holland, most famous for its tulips, always draws visitors at the first sign of spring. One of its most famous destinations, Keukenhof, located in Lisse, is among the world’s largest flower gardens. The park is 79 acres and boasts approximately 7 million flowers each year. This colorful garden is open annually from mid-March to mid- May, but mid-April is the ideal time to see the tulips. WASHINGTON, D.C. Besides the monuments and historic buildings, one of the biggest attractions in Washington, D.C. is the cherry tree blossoms. Travelers who visit the Tidal Basin during the spring can witness

3,000 trees, which were a gift from Tokyo in 1912, flaunt their beautiful pink blossoms. The best time to see the spectacle is from the end of March through the end of April. ANZA-BORREGO DESERT STATE PARK Desert lavender, flowering cacti, pygmy poppies, and rock daisies are just a few of the many wildflowers decorating Anza-Borrego Desert State Park. The various native species are often seen weaved together to form a colorful carpet over any barren patch in the park, which is located just two hours from San Diego. In addition to flowers, visitors often spot bighorn sheep. Wildflower blossoms vary in intensity each year, but they typically begin to bloom in late February or early March.

Next time you’re planning a spring trip, consider visiting one of the world’s most beautiful flower displays. No green thumb required.
