Peace of Mind Post JULY 2023
Your Estate Plan Gives You Freedom!
H appy Fourth of July, everyone! I hope you all enjoyed celebrating America’s freedom this month. I love learning about Independence Day because you can celebrate freedom in many ways. Perhaps freedom to you means being able to care for yourself, having the ability to travel and leave your home, or becoming financially independent. How you view your independence depends on your unique circumstances and experiences. However, some of you may feel like your independence is quickly slipping from your grasp. As you age, your mind and body won’t be able to perform like they used to. Maybe you need assistance running errands, an extra pair of hands around your home, and so on. You may feel like your freedom is being stripped away because you can’t perform things on your own anymore. I understand the thought— many of my clients have experienced these same frustrations. Fortunately, having an estate plan can help you regain and exercise your independence! While your estate plan will help your loved ones when you pass away, it can benefit you while you’re still alive. Having the freedom to outline your wishes, where and who your assets go to, who will be your financial and medical power of attorney, how you want to receive care, and your end-of-life plans is the epitome of independence. Why? Because you have the final say! You don’t have to worry about “what if” scenarios — you get to ensure everything goes how you want it according to your instructions.
it is comfortable! So, if you wish to remain home as you age, you must be open to changes. These adjustments can be the layout of your home by rearranging furniture to reduce potential fall risks, easily accessible storage, sturdy hand-railings, making clear entryways, and more. Furthermore, you may need assistance from your family members or a caregiver with your tasks. Making a mental adjustment that you will need to rely on others will significantly benefit you. Remember, you’re still independent even if you ask for help! You can even outline your wishes on how you decide to live at home in your estate plan. If there are certain services you’ll require, items you need installed, and other factors, write them in your estate plan — it will make your transition much smoother. If you are wondering how estate planning can help you remain independent or need assistance updating your plan, don’t hesitate to call me. My utmost priority is to ensure your needs are met.
So, if you think about it, you have so much independence! And always remember, it’s okay to ask for help — it’s not a sign of weakness. Try not to place your worth and value into materialistic things. You’re still independent even if you need assistance from time to time. Speaking of independence, one of the main things I hear from clients is that they want to stay in their homes as they age — they don’t want to go to an assisted living facility or nursing home. While this is very doable, you have to be willing to make changes. I’ve had many people tell me that they will “tough it out” and remain home. But how is it enjoyable if you’re living uncomfortably? You want to be in your house because

FLY, DISC, FLY
Disc golf has exploded in popularity during the past few years. The Professional Disc Golf Association reports more than 7,000 disc golf courses in the United States. It’s inexpensive, accessible, and fun, which has made it the perfect sport for many Americans. But disc golf isn’t the only sport that involves Frisbees. Many other disc-related sports are gaining popularity and are worth checking out. Here are a few entertaining disc-related sports you might not be familiar with. Guts Dodgeball is one of the most exciting games many can remember from our youth. There’s nothing more exhilarating than hitting someone with a ball and getting the final out. Guts is similar to dodgeball, with some slight differences. The court is split into two halves, with each team occupying one half and facing the other and a goal line at the back of each side. Players take turns throwing the discs at the other team, who must stand still until the disc leaves the thrower’s hand. The throwing team is awarded a point if the disc strikes a player or crosses the goal line. The first team to score 21 points wins. Fricket Fricket is a two-on-two sport often called the cricket of disc sports. Start by getting four 5-foot wickets made from plastic or bamboo. Place two side by side, about 15 inches apart, and then place the other two 40 yards away. Place red Solo cups on top of the wickets, and that’s all the setup you need! Each team takes turns throwing their disc at the wickets. You gain a point if you knock a cup on the ground or your disc passes between the wickets without touching them. If the opposing team catches your throw one-handed, they get a point. The first team to 21 points wins. Disc Dog There are many disc sports involving man’s best friend. Toss and Fetch requires the owner to throw as many discs as possible for their dog to catch in 60 seconds. Freestyle competitions are choreographed performances that last over a minute. And long-distance events showcase the thrower’s arm and the dog’s speed. Participating in these events takes a lot of training, but they are incredibly entertaining to watch and a great way to bond with your dog. Lesser-Known Disc Sports to Try This Summer

Although Independence Day has passed, you can still celebrate throughout the entire month! One of the ways we like to honor the holiday is by looking at some facts about the Revolutionary War and America that we may not have known. Here are a few of our favorites! Soldiers by day, actors by night. Have you ever wondered what soldiers did when they weren’t on the frontlines fighting? When the British Army held New York City, they performed in Broadway shows to pass the time! Most of their performances were Shakespeare plays, as he was a prominent British playwright. The soldiers would also improv during some lines and reference pro-British sentiments. The British are coming … to examine your teeth? We all know Paul Revere as the person who rode through Boston on horseback, informing his neighbors that the British were coming. But did you know that before the war, he was a silversmith and a dentist? Two months after his legendary ride through Boston, Revere was asked if he could identify a soldier he may have known. Revere looked at the deceased soldier’s mouth and noticed ivory teeth that he made for the man. He was able to identify the soldier as Major Joseph Warren. This is believed to be the first time dental forensics was used for identification. The designer of the 50-star flag lived in Lancaster, Ohio. In 1958, a history teacher asked his students to re-create the American flag. Robert G. Heft was 16 years old at the time and felt that the U.S. would add two states in the near future and chose to create a 50-star flag. When presenting his flag to the class, Robert’s teacher wasn’t impressed, even asking him if he knew how many states there were! However, in 1959, Alaska and Hawaii became a part of the U.S., bringing the total state count to 50. So, Robert sent President Dwight D. Eisenhower a letter with information about his flag, and the president invited Robert to Washington, D.C., for a ceremony that adopted his flag as the official flag of the U.S.

The Swine That Dared to Defy
The Story of the Danish Protest Pig An Unconventional ‘Bacon’ of Hope
flag. So, they got crafty. Danish farmers began to crossbreed their pigs to create a new breed, one that had the same markings as the Danish flag. These pigs were red in color, with one white vertical stripe and one white horizontal stripe. The farmers named their new pigs Protestschwein, or the Danish Protest Pig. This protest pig quickly became the mascot of Danish cultural independence, and their efforts didn’t go unnoticed by Prussian authorities. In 1881, a local Prussian police station sent communications back to the government in Berlin that farmers were breeding strange-looking pigs. However, while they could not prove that farmers were knowingly breeding the pigs to look like the Danish flag, “it was believed that the farmers were well aware of this and that this pig represented an affront to the Prussians,” according to records from the Red Holstein Breeders Association.
In the 19th century, Denmark and Prussia couldn’t agree on where to draw
their border. Both countries refused to concede or couldn’t reach an agreement on which country would ultimately control Southern Jutland, which today is Germany’s northernmost state called Schleswig-Holstein. This refusal to compromise ultimately led to war, and in 1848, Denmark won control. However, their victory was short-lived, as roughly a decade later, the Second Schleswig War was underway. This time, though, Prussia was victorious. After their victory, the Prussian authorities slowly began to move into the peninsula, implementing new laws over the Danes living there. These new laws prohibited anything Danish, including all uses of the Danish flag. Needless to say, the Danes were not happy — especially the farmers.
Today, the Danish Protest Pig is recognized as its own breed but has a different name: the Husum Red Pied. And, the now-German state of Schleswig-Holstein supports the protection of this pig due to the cultural
These Danish farmers knew they had to protest this oppressive Prussian government, but they couldn’t just publicly wave the Danish
significance it offered its Danish ancestors so many years ago.
