FROM CRAYON MASTERPIECES TO COLLEGE PREP Fatherhood at Full Speed Serving You In: Baltimore, MD • Bethesda, MD • Clinton, MD Ellicott City, MD • Frederick, MD • Germantown, MD Wheaton, MD • Washington, D.C. • Alexandria, VA • Manassas, VA Father’s Day has a way of making you pause and realize how fast everything is moving. One day, you’re holding a baby who won’t sleep through the night, and the next, you’re figuring out how to talk through high school stress and teenage mood swings. That’s where I’m at now — with teen twins, a boy and a girl, who are navigating life at full speed, and I’m doing my best to keep pace. Being a dad doesn’t come with a manual, but it does come with moments: some messy, some funny, and some surprisingly meaningful, that add up to something pretty great. The Exhausting and Unforgettable First Years The early years are magical. You’re exhausted, unsure, and constantly second-guessing yourself, but it somehow works. The toddler years are loud and sticky, but they’re also full of fun and wonder. Every “Why?” question, couch fort, and crayon masterpiece builds bonds before they even know what the word means. The Middle Years of Discovery and Independence Then come the elementary school years. Suddenly, your kids have opinions. They discover favorite books, make friends, start sports or music, and you start to see who they’re becoming. It’s a time of learning — for them and you. You’re not just keeping them alive anymore, you’re helping shape how they see the world, the lessons they learn, and the connections they make. “Being a dad doesn’t come with a manual, but it does come with moments: some messy, some funny, and some surprisingly meaningful, that add up to something pretty great.”

The Fast and Loud Teen Years Now, I’m smack dab in the middle of the teen years. They’re old enough to challenge me and question everything (and they do), but they still come to me when it counts. Sometimes, the conversations are short — just a check-in while they raid the fridge. Other times, they hit you with a late-night question that stays with you long after they’ve gone to bed. This stage is fast and complicated, but it’s real. And it’s rewarding in ways I never expected. There’s No One Way to Be a Dad If there’s one thing I’ve learned, it’s that there’s no “perfect” way to be a dad. Some days you get it right. Some days you don’t, and that’s okay! What matters is showing up, paying attention, and keeping the connection strong, even if it looks different at every age (which it certainly does)! To the Other Dads Out There Happy Father’s Day, whether you’re changing diapers, coaching youth soccer, helping with college applications, or texting your adult kids to check in. Your role matters, even when it’s not obvious. The effort you put in matters more than you think!

Enjoy your day with your favorite meal, cocktail, sport, game, or movie, and a great day with your kids. You’ve earned it!

Don’t Let a Summer S

Going to a theme park is one of the most memorable ways to spend a family vacation. Theme parks are full of excitement, but they can also be overwhelming — especially with young kids in tow. The right game plan can turn a day of long lines and potential meltdowns into a fun, memorable adventure. Plan smart, play hard. Rather than simply packing up and heading to the park, take some time to research and plan your trip. Look into show schedules and ride restrictions, such as height limits, ahead of time so you can plan your day. Many parks also have mobile apps to track wait times and order food. Visit the most popular attractions early before the crowds swell. Visiting on weekdays or during off-peak seasons THRIVE IN THE THRILLS A FAMILY GUIDE TO THEME PARK FUN

SAFETY TIPS FOR NATI

Did you know that this month is National Safety Month? While most of us are thinking about vacations, pool days, and backyard barbecues, it’s also the perfect time to think about something less exciting but still incredibly important: safety. Here at Malloy Law, we see firsthand how quickly a fun summer day can take a turn. Accidents happen, often when and where we least expect them. So, in the spirit of keeping everyone safe, let’s look at a few practical, easy-to-remember tips to help you and your loved ones stay safe this summer. Watch the Water Pools, lakes, and beaches are all summer favorites, but they come with risks. Whether it’s a backyard pool or a public beach, always supervise kids near water, no matter how confident they are as swimmers. Also, be sure pool gates are locked and you have life jackets on hand (and actually use them) during boating trips. Stay Alert on the Road More people hit the road in summer, whether it’s for vacations or weekend getaways. That means more distracted drivers, traffic, and, unfortunately, accidents. Stay focused behind the wheel, put your phone away, and don’t drive drowsy or under the influence. And if you’re biking or walking, be extra aware — drivers aren’t always paying attention like they should be.

also helps avoid long lines to maximize your family’s fun. Remember snacks, drinks, and sun protection.

Theme park restaurants can be expensive and busy. If you plan to

dine in the park, make reservations to avoid wasting precious time in long lines. If allowed, pack your own lunch to save time and money. It’s also wise to carry reusable water bottles to keep the family hydrated without breaking the bank on expensive bottled water.

If visiting a park during summer, don’t forget the sun protection. Sunscreen, hats, sunglasses, and breathable clothing are a must when walking all day in the heat. Taking a few minutes for a midday break in a shaded area or at an indoor show will help the family recharge for the rest of the visit. Keep expectations flexible and fun. Even with careful planning, things won’t always work out like you hope — expect ride closures, long lines, and cranky kids. Creating a list of backup attractions or activities can help you easily pivot if Plan A doesn’t work out. And don’t try to see everything in one visit. Trying to hit every ride can backfire and make the trip miserable. Often, the best memories happen in unexpected moments. A little structure mixed with flexibility can lead to a lot of fun and ensure your family’s theme park adventure is about making memories rather than managing stress.

IONAL SAFETY MONTH

Grill With Caution Backyard barbecues are a summer staple, but grilling mishaps send thousands of people to the ER annually. Keep grills away from structures, don’t leave them unattended, and always have a fire extinguisher nearby just in case. Beat the Heat

Heat-related illnesses sneak up fast, especially in young kids, older adults, and pets. Take breaks in the shade, wear sunscreen, drink plenty of water, and never leave anyone (pets included) in a parked car. Watch for Slipping Hazards

The Hidden Health Risks of Burnout Canary in the Coal Mine?

Outdoor gatherings often mean uneven ground, wet pool decks, or slick patios. Be mindful of where people walk, especially kids and older guests. For more information on some of the most common summer injuries, hazards to watch for, and how Malloy Law can help, scan the QR code.

Does your job or housework leave you feeling burnt out? If so, you aren’t alone.

Burnout is a common affliction in our technological age. An estimated 48% of employees and 53% of managers claim they’re burned out, according to a 2022 Microsoft survey of 20,000 workers, and stress levels have worsened since then. Career-driven people, overworked employees, and working people from all walks of life can experience alienation, extreme exhaustion, loss of meaning, and reduced performance, all hallmarks of burnout. The term was coined in the 1970s to denote the exhaustion often experienced by people in the helping professions. Burnout is not listed in the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual for Mental Disorders, the professionals’ guide to diagnostic standards. However, the World Health Organization recognizes it as a factor in people’s health. Some doctors use the Maslach Burnout Inventory, a scale measuring a person’s level of exhaustion, cynicism, and professional efficacy, to diagnose burnout. Items include, “I feel emotionally drained by my work.” The symptoms of burnout can serve as the canary in the coal mine — an early warning that overload, overwork, or stress may be on the verge of harming your health. Consider an extended break from work to ease the strain.

Golden Summer Squash and Corn Soup

Inspired by AllRecipes.com

Ingredients • 1 tbsp extra- virgin olive oil • 1 medium shallot, chopped • 2 medium summer squash (about 1 lb), diced • 3 tsp chopped fresh thyme or oregano, divided • 1 14-oz can reduced-sodium chicken or vegetable broth • 1/4 tsp salt • 1 cup corn kernels (from 1 large ear) • 1 tsp lemon juice • 1/4 cup crumbled feta cheese

Directions 1. In a medium saucepan, heat oil over medium heat. Add shallot and cook for 1 minute. 2. Add squash and 1 tsp herbs; cook 3–5 minutes until the squash softens; stir occasionally. 3. Add broth and salt; bring to a boil. Reduce heat to simmer and cook for 5 more minutes until squash is soft. 4. In a blender, purée soup until smooth. Return the soup to the pan and stir in corn. 5. Simmer over medium heat and cook 3–5 minutes until corn is tender, stirring occasionally. Remove from heat; stir in lemon juice. 6. Serve garnished with remaining 2 tsp herbs and feta.

If your ennui deepens into low self-esteem, guilt, hopelessness, or thoughts of suicide, a vacation or long weekend isn’t likely to help. Clinical depression or anxiety requires different treatment by a therapist or mental health professional.

The bottom line: If you’re feeling burned out, it’s time to put on the brakes, check

out for a while, and tune in more closely to your overall well-being!
