Blasts from the past

Who does not dream of becoming a fire fighter one day? While the job does require a certain amount of strength, the burden is lightened when you have some helping hands, as this youngster discovered while testing his skills during a demonstration at the recent Riceville Fair.

Even the re-enactors are captivated by the irresistible charm of rural Glengarry, bringing their families to bivouac for the entire weekend. Visiting regiments such as the “Glengarry Light Infantry Fenci- bles,” a regiment portraying a local mili- tia that was raised during the war, will be leading several other regiments against an impending American attack. Rain or shine, the weekend will treat visitors to regular drills, period music, an 1812 film presentation, children’s activities, an 1812 themed church service, a noon cannon salute, a fashion show, demonstrations in the encampments, all leading up to a bat- tle that will be staged live daily at 3 p.m. Mike Drouillard, a member of the Glen- garry Light Infantry Fencibles, says that he is particularly excited about staging another War of 1812 re-enactment at the Pioneer Museum. “I’ve been part of re-enactments for almost 20 years, and I believe that the Museum and its grounds have the best venue we have ever ex- perienced. The heritage buildings and grounds provide just the right flavour for our re-enactment.” By popular demand, the fashion show will be returning at 1 p.m. both days. It gives visitors the unique opportunity to learn about civilian and military fashion trends of the early Regency period. The Kenyon Presbyterian Church in Dunvegan will be welcoming re-enactors and visi- tors Sunday at 11 a.m. to an 1812 themed church service. New this year, a pumpkin pie bake-off will be taking place through- out the encampments with judging tak- ing place Sunday. A special area will be set up for children’s activities, including the opportunity to try on traditional uni- forms. For something different, 1812 re- productions are available for sale to the public by visiting sutlers, or merchants.
