WHY WE’RE SPONSORING LAKE WASHINGTON PREMIER FOOTBALL CLUB

And What Makes LWPFC Unique!

Here at PT Pro Inc., we’re big fans of youth sports. Not only do they help kids stay active and get exercise while having fun, they also teach team-

Partnering with PT Pro felt like a natural fit because they share the holistic approach we take with our players, and their screenings and expertise mean LWPFC can provide a really unique benefit to club members. As we’ve worked with Maureen and her staff over the last year, we’ve also been able to enlist their professional expertise to help develop standardized warmups and cooldowns for each of our teams. It’s been so valuable for players and coaching staff. We’re so grateful to have PT Pro’s support to help us continue to provide a top-quality soccer program that’s affordable to families in our community. If you’re interested in getting your kid involved, you can learn more on our website, LakeWashingtonPremierFC.com. We’d love to have your athlete join us on the field this season! –Janet Jones , LWPFC Club President

To that end, we are a not-for-profit organization and we provide scholarships for local families. We’ve seen so many talented kids who are great community members who need some financial support to be able to pursue their dream of playing soccer. And in 2020, this became even more important as so many families have experienced financial hardship with COVID. Another thing that sets LWPFC apart from other clubs is that we value player development and view our players holistically. Many kids start with us around kindergarten age, hone their skills through summer camps and years of play, and go on to be recruited in their high school years as they work toward their goal of playing at the collegiate level. Teams have dedicated and qualified coaches, and this helps with player development as well. So does the general sense of community we have at LWPFC. We’re competitive on the field, but we’re also looking for community builders, good team players, and kids who are committed to the sport and see a future in it. Just like we want to make sure our kids keep their eye on the ball, we want to ensure parents and coaches keep their focus on their kids’ health and development as athletes. PT Pro helps us do this by offering free injury prevention screenings and providing individualized training programs for our athletes. Kids who’ve had injuries and worked with the therapists at PT Pro have gotten back on course so quickly. They are incredibly thorough and so good at what they do. It’s a true asset to the program.

building and other important life skills. We’re proud to sponsor the local soccer club, Lake Washington Premier Football Club (LWPFC), which serves kids. LWPFC is an amazing organization — both competitive and fun. We’re proud to be a sponsor and to help by offering free screenings for the athletes. This month, the club president, Janet Jones, will take the reins and tell you more. Youth soccer is a pretty big deal around here! There are many different clubs to choose from, but I don’t know any quite like LWPFC. I first got involved with the club when my son began playing four years ago. Like many of our players’ parents do, I began volunteering with the club. First, I was a team manager. Then, as my son continued to play — and my daughter later began playing too — I became the vice president. A year and a half ago I became the club president. It’s not too difficult to find volunteers like myself because so many people believe in what LWPFC is doing. We have an excellent program with teams competing on a national level and scouts recruiting players for college programs, and yet we’re also committed to ensuring that every kid who has the ability and desire to play soccer is able to access and afford it. We don’t believe, like some other clubs, that if you can’t pay, you can’t play.

2. Purchase a seed-sprouting jar kit OR a corresponding number of quart-sized glass canning jars, wide-mouthed canning rings, and stainless-steel sprouting screens (these will replace the metal jar lids). If you have jars and rings at home, use those and save another buck. 3. Add 3 tablespoons of sprouting seeds and 2 cups of water to the bottom of each clean jar. Screw on the lids and sprouting screens, then swirl the seeds, pour out the water, and replace it another 2–4 cups of water. Leave the jars on the counter to soak overnight. (These measurements may vary from seed to seed. Check your seed packaging or ask your local gardening store for guidance.) 4. In the morning, dump out the water and repeat Step 3. Then, place each jar upside down or at an angle (in a

Repeat Step 4 several times a day for 3–5 days, until your seeds sprout. Then, dry the sprouts and store them in the fridge. When it’s time to eat your homegrown sprouts, be careful! Seeds can be contaminated with bacteria, so The Cleveland Clinic recommends boiling, roasting, or steaming your sprouts, just in case. To learn more about growing your own sprouts, pick up “The Sprout Book,” “The Sprouting Book,” or “Homegrown Sprouts” at your local library.

MEET MARIA! Our Patient Care Coordinator

PLANT-BASED BLUEBERRY MUFFINS

It’s blueberry season! Whip up this simple muffin recipe to celebrate in style.

Ingredients

• •

1/2 cup plus 2 tbsp sugar

• • • • • •

1 cup soy milk

1/4 cup plus 2 tbsp canola oil 1 tsp vanilla extract

1 tsp apple cider vinegar

2 cups flour

If you’ve been in the clinic recently, chances are good that you’ve already met our patient care coordinator, Maria, who is responsible for getting patients scheduled and checked in for appointments. Here’s your chance to get to know her a little more! Maria joined our team back in February. She graduated from Central Washington University last year with a degree in biology and had been working remotely for a while before she realized that wasn’t a great fit for her. She missed interacting with people face-to-face, which is part of what drew her to her current position. She said she also wanted to work in a field that would allow her to explore different career options. With a background in biology, working at a PT clinic seemed like a great start. Maria says she’s been able to see many aspects of PT Pro already. First as a patient when she had a PT appointment at the clinic, then from the inside while working at the front desk and interacting with patients and therapists. Maria says one of her favorite parts of her job so far is that she gets to see patients progress each week. “I like seeing our patients getting better. It’s nice to see that no matter how they come in, they leave super satisfied.” Since she’s new to the Redmond area, Maria spends a lot of her time outside of work exploring. She especially enjoys trying the different food options in town. “I came from a small town and there weren’t many options for food!” she said. But in Redmond, she’s found a lot of variety and diversity in the offerings. She also travels back home to see her parents and two Chihuahuas, Betsy and Lucy, as much as she can.

How PT Helps With Dizziness and Vertigo

FEELING DIZZY?

PT Can Help! Physical therapy is a great way to address pain and help patients recover from injuries, but its uses extend far beyond that. For instance, many people don’t know that PT can help

a stroke or brain injury. It can also occur in patients who have diabetes and low pressure.

HOW IS DIZZINESS DIFFERENT FROM VERTIGO? While dizziness leaves you with the sensation that your head is spinning, vertigo leaves you feeling like your surroundings are moving or spinning. Nevertheless, both can cause imbalance, a sense

patients who are experiencing balance issues, dizziness, and/or vertigo. This is known as vestibular rehabilitation, and our therapists at PT Pro are skilled in creating treatment plans for these issues. WHAT CAUSES DIZZINESS? Dizziness is often a symptom that comes and goes. While it is not in and of itself life-threatening, it is a sign that something else is wrong. It may be a sign that you have an inner ear disorder. If you can recall your days as a student in biology, you’ll remember that the mechanisms in our inner ear help us balance. Fluid buildup in the ear or other issues can throw off our balance and cause dizziness.

of unsteadiness on your feet, or falls. Long or regular bouts of either can also decrease your quality of life.

HOW CAN PT HELP? The good news is that PT is an incredibly effective way to address vestibular problems. It can help ease your symptoms, improve your balance, reduce your risk of falling, and increase your quality of life. If you’re experiencing bouts of dizziness or vertigo, consult with our PTs to get an individualized treatment plan that will address the causes of your symptoms and get you back to feeling steady on your feet. Dizziness can also be a medication side effect; a symptom associated with headaches, migraines, or neck pain; or a lingering symptom from
