ALEX EDWARDS
The skills and experience acquired in the armed forces have shaped Alex Edwards’ approach to running his construction company
● Determination was key. The Royal Marines taught me to resist the easy option and never give up, which I apply to every job now, finding the best solutions for our customers, no matter how tough. How has your time in the Royal Marines influenced the way you build relationships with team members and clients? In both the Royal Marines and my construction business, building strong relationships is absolutely essential. In the Royal Marines, we learned the importance of trust and camaraderie, which are values I’ve carried into my business. We aim to create lasting connections with our team and clients, firmly believing that word of mouth is the most powerful form of advertising. By working closely with our clients throughout each project, we ensure the highest levels of quality and trust. This approach fosters relationships that endure well beyond the completion of any job, creating loyal clients who return to us time and again. How much of a good/natural fit is construction for a former member of the armed forces? ? Construction is a fantastic fit for service leavers, and I see this firsthand with the many tradespeople I work with who have a military background. Our clients truly appreciate the strong work ethic and discipline we bring from our experience and time in service. Teamwork is fundamental in both the military and construction, making the transition remarkably smooth. Having already learned to work effectively in a team, service leavers find it easy to integrate and excel in the construction environment. Their military experience translates into reliability, efficiency and a can-do attitude, which are highly valued in our industry. What drew you to carpentry after your time in the Royal Marines? Before joining the Royal Marines, I was a qualified carpenter. I completed an apprenticeship straight out of school. I’ve
always been practical so carpentry felt like a natural fit. Working with wood and creating something tangible brought me a lot of satisfaction. Returning to carpentry after my service just made sense; it was a way to reconnect with a familiar and fulfilling craft, providing a smooth transition back to civilian life. The skills and discipline I gained in the Royal Marines have only enhanced my abilities as a carpenter. What do you love most about working in construction and being a business owner? I love the independence and the freedom to choose a team that matches my high standards for quality. Seeing a project come together from start to finish is incredibly satisfying. But the best part? Seeing the clients’ faces light up when the job is done to perfection. Their satisfaction is the ultimate reward. Knowing that my hard work and dedication have made a difference in someone’s life brings a sense of accomplishment and pride. Each project is a new challenge, and exceeding client expectations is always the goal.
