WELCOME

The Men ’s Golf Committee welcomes you to the 2020 golf season. This section of the book will provide you with all relevant information regarding rules and events for 2020. This season we are retaining an extended qualifying period for major championships including no qualifying for certain senior championships. Following are some highlights for 2020:  We are continuing with our online tournament registration for 2020. Players will again be able to access a menu of all our men’s events for 20 20 from the club website. Each tournament will have its own dedicated webpage that will house format and tournament information, as well as results, player analytics, and pictures following play. Online tournament sign-ups will be available for most events. We expect this to be a terrific addition to our tournament program.  New for 2020, registration for both the Twilight League as well as the 84 th Invitational will be taken through our online tournament registration as well as by phone call to the golf shop as in years past. Twilight registration opens March 13 th at 9:00 a.m. and Invitational registration opens March 27 th at 9:00 a.m.  We will have three weekend Member-Member events in 2020. The Holiday tournament will be played July 4th - 5th and features varying formats for each nine holes. The Labor Day event will take place on Saturday, September 5 th and will be a flighted better-ball match play event. The closing Member-Member will be a better ball of partners event on October 3rd - 4th.  Again, our one-day Member-Guests will feature a different format for each event. The events will be a ‘ Bring 1 or 3 guest’ and we will cap the field at 104 players. We expect these to be heavily subscribed, so begin lining up your guests. Sign-ups for One Day Member-Guests will begin about one month before the event.  We will celebrate the 84th Invitational this year, and it will again be our marquee event. Please plan on supporting this special event. We expect this event to sell out quickly. The event dates are June 18th -20th

 The Beat the Pro event will again be scheduled for Memorial Day weekend.

 The Senior and Super Senior Stroke Play Championship has moved on the calendar to August 29 – 30. We are hoping to see a full field for this event.

 Regarding handicaps, the Handicap Committee will once again determine any reductions to player ’s handicaps prior to an event.

 The Golf Shop will post all scores for tournament events, including annual championship match play scores.

 Our peer review system will cont inue to be in place. A member may anonymously ask the handicap committee to review another member ’s handicap to ensure scores are being posted, tournament index is similar to non-tournament index, blatant score manipulation does not exist, etc. The peer review can be accessed on the golf page of the WCC website.

 Like seasons past, our success will be judged by your PARTICIPATION. We have something for everyone and we hope you support our events on the schedule.

RULES FOR 2020 MEN ’ S GOLF SEASON

GOLF EVENTS

The golf events at Wilmington Country Club provide a variety of formats for all levels of competition. This section provides information on the events including a schedule, rules, and participation procedures. Any changes to the published schedules will be posted in advance. The Men ’s Golf Program is divided into two tournament sections: Annual Championships and Major Tournaments.

I. Annual Championships

ENTRY FEES

Participation in the Annual Championships may be gained by paying a $130 annual entry fee. A member may instead choose to pay a per event fee of $35.00 for each Annual Championship. All events in which a member participates before his annual entry fee is received will be charged the individual event rate.

ANNUAL CHAMPIONSHIPS

Better Ball of Partners President ’s Cup

Senior Match Play Championship Mixed Two Ball Championship Senior & Super Senior Handicap Championship Men ’ s Match Play Championship WCC Club Championship Senior Stroke Play Championship Men ’ s Putting Championship

Matches in the Annual Championships must be completed by the date noted in the schedule. Continuing in 2020, players advancing will be asked to confirm their play date with their opponent to the Golf Shop by Thursday following the close of the round. In any match, if the two opposing sides cannot agree on a time to play, then the match must be played on the original deadline of Sunday at 1 p.m. Requests for match extensions must be submitted to the Men’s Golf Committee for approval. For the convenience of all, participants are requested not to enter tournaments unless they are reasonably sure of being able to play on the appointed days. The Men ’ s Golf Committee may extend playing deadlines only after reviewing extraordinary extenuating circumstances. All qualifying rounds for the Annual Championships must be played with a male member(s) (not including the participan t’ s partner), who will attest the qualifying member(s) score. Participants may only attempt to qualify ONCE for each Annual Championship.

GREENVILLE CUP

The winners of the Better Ball of Partners, President ’s Cup, Senior Handicap Championship, Club Championship (Championship Flight), Senior Club Championship and Match Play will qualify to play in the Greenville Cup. In the case of duplicate winners, the Me n’s Golf Committee will invite replacement player(s). The Greenville Cup is a tri-club match between Wilmington Country Club, Bidermann Golf Club, and Fieldstone Golf Club. The seven players, along with a Golf Professional, will compete against seven players and the Golf Professional from each of the other clubs.

HANDICAP & SCORE POSTING

Members must post a score in the handicap computer for all rounds played including qualifying and match play rounds. The Golf Shop will post tournament rounds, but it is the player’s responsibility to make certain all of their scores are posted. In any given match, if all 18 holes are not completed refer to the following for guidance: If 7 or more holes are played, the player must post an 9-hole score. If 14 or more holes are played, the player must post an 18-hole score. In either case, scores for holes not played should be recorded as net par (A score equal to the par of a hole adjusted for any handicap strokes applied on that hole). A player who starts, but does not complete a hole or is conceded a stroke must record for handicap purposes the most likely score. The most likely score may not exceed the player ’ s net double bogey score (A score equal to the par of a hole plus two strokes and adjusted for any handicap strokes applied on that hole), which is the maximum hole score for handicap purposes.

II. Major Tournaments

Major Tournaments have a separate entry fee and require registration in advance of the competition. Members may call the Golf Shop to register for an event, or use online tournament registration. Any golfer signed up to play in a scheduled major tournament event will be billed for the individual entry fee should he fail to cancel more than 72 hours before the event begins.

ELIGIBILITY

The golf events are open to all qualified members of amateur status, 18 years of age and over. However, in events where alcoholic beverages are included, eligibility is limited to participants age 21 and over. Upon Request, the Men ’s Golf Committee may allow certain juniors to play in events. Senior Social Members may not compete in Club events.

HANDICAPS

All individual handicaps will be calculated in accordance with the USGA Handicap System. A current handicap for WCC competitions is one that is supported by a total of five (5) scores posted at Wilmington Country Club during the previous and current playing seasons. H andicaps are updated daily during the playing season. Any player who does not have an established current handicap will play to a handicap set by the handicap committee. In handicap events, new members may use a current, attested handicap from their previous club. If such a handicap is not available, the Golf Professional may compute a temporary handicap until one is established. A minimum of 3 scores is necessary to establish such a temporary handicap. A player, unless otherwise posted, shall use his handicap posted at the time the competition begins. Some events will use a handicap index from a date posted for that event. If the tournament lasts longer than a week, each player shall use his handicap in effect at the time the round is played. The Handicap Committee at its sole discretion can adjust any individual ’s handicap that may be in question. Note: If a player belongs to more than one club, he/she is obligated to register as a multi-member with GHIN so that all scores at every club will enter into his handicap computation. A player should always post all scores both home and away. In the event a player should have different handicaps at different clubs, the player shall use his lowest USGA Handicap Index when competing.

SCORING

Following a stroke play event, scorecards should be signed and attested by a fellow competitor. Attesting a scorecard, when a round is complete, certifies that the USGA Rules of Golf have been followed by each contestant on the card. In match play, players should agree on the result of the match before leaving the scoring area. In the case of a tie or match that ends in an all square result, the following procedures will be used. In match play, a match that ends all square should be played off hole by hole until one side wins a hole. The play-off should begin immediately on the hole where the match began. Strokes should be allocated as in the previous round. In stroke play or handicap stroke play competition, playoff procedures will be described in the conditions of competition for the event. I f a playoff is not feasible, matching of scorecards will be used to break the tie. The USGA accepted method will be used. The winner will be determined on the basis of the best score for the last nine holes. If the tying players have the same score for the last nine holes, the winner will be determined on the basis of the last six holes, last three holes, and finally the 18 th Hole. If this procedure does not produce a winner, it will be referred to the Director of Golf or Men ’ s Golf Committee.
