Community Based Care
Sumner College proudly supports community and population health initiatives throughout the State of Oregon. Population health is vital to the improvement of the health of the nation. The Oregon Legislature directed the Oregon Health Care Workforce Committee to conduct a study of the nursing workforce to identify challenges of nurse staffing. The report looked at staffing shortages, education, clinical experiences, and future needs of the Oregon nursing workforce. It was recommended that nursing education incorporate a greater level of exposure to population health and community-based care models. It was recommended that all nursing students engage in clinical experiences as part of their education and these should include long-term care facilities and other community-based locations along with some in acute care (Bates, et al., 2022). The Sumner College BSN program is accredited by the Commission on Collegiate Nursing Education (CCNE). Incorporating the American Association of Colleges of Nursing (AACN) Essentials and competencies. These include provision of care using the four spheres of care model: prevention/promotion of health and wellbeing, chronic disease care, regenerative (critical/trauma care, and hospice/palliative care. Students should see patients through the lens of wholeness and interconnectedness with family and community. We must appreciate how the social, political, and economic environment influences health and well-being. The workforce of the future needs to attract and retain registered nurses who choose to practice in diverse settings, including community settings to sustain the nation’s health (AACN, 2021).
05
Primary care is extending into communities. This enables our healthcare delivery systems to improve patient care, improve the health of populations, decrease costs of health care, and improve care team well-being. Several of the competencies for BSN education include community and public health. Direct care clinical experiences should be provided in a wide range of settings including long term care, home health, and community- based settings (AACN, 2021). The Oregon Health Care Association (OHCA) provides workforce development support to the heath care agencies of Oregon. The OHCA, with grant support from the Oregon Department of Human Services (ODHS) has piloted an initiative in long term care in Oregon. The initiative includes clinical internships for advanced nursing students. The program provided exposure to and understanding of individual care within a community care system as well as the role of the RN in long term care in a leadership position. The opportunities were very well received and several students who participated took positions in long-term care serving vulnerable populations. Sumner College has been given the opportunity to participate in this important initiative (OHCA, 2024). References American Association of Colleges of Nursing (AACN), (2021).
