ALEXANDRIA | A tearful Roxane Villen- euve-Robertson conceded she and her campaign team failed to win the hearts and minds of voters in Glengarry-Prescot- t-Russell. “I’d dreamt I was actually going to give a victory speech, so it’s pretty hard,” she said during a sombre gathering of supporters in Alexandria late at night long after the June 12 election polls closed. “Certainly not what I wanted it to be.” Villeneuve-Robertson came close to breaking down several times during her speech as, alternating between French and English, she listed and thanked all the chief members of her campaign team, several veteran volunteers and supporters of the Progressive Conservative party in the rid- ing, family and friends for their support. She did not rule out the possibility of try- ing again to follow in the footsteps of her father, former PC MPP and agriculture min- ister Noble Villeneuve. “You’re probably wondering if I am going run next time,” she said to loud applause. “I truly believe that with this (campaign) team, I will.” Villeneuve-Robertson and many other Ontario Progressive Conservative candid- ates faced defeat at the polls as Premier Kathleen Wynne’s Liberals rolled up a ma- jority win within an hour after the official closing of the polls across the province.

Roxane Villeneuve-Robertson (left) shared hugs with her supporters as the Progressive Conservative candidate faced the end of her election dream of becoming Glengarry-Prescott- Russell’s new MPP. Liberal incumbent Grant Crack retained his seat in the legislature and also enjoyed seeing his party returned with a clear majority government, taking seats away from the Tories and the NDP. step down as head of the party, leaving the door open for a future leadership race. “You know the unions were tough on us this round,” said Villeneuve-Robertson, adding that several public sector unions waged aggressive ad campaigns targeting Hudak and his fiscal restraint platform. “Their fearmongering tactics worked,” she said. “It scared enough people in Ontario to turn a Liberal (minority) government into a majority government.” dans le respect.»
