STRENGTH IN UNITY, HOPE IN DIVERSITY

Bianca Gomez, a former special education teacher and re- cent graduate of UW-Madison's Afro-American Studies Masters program, brings extensive knowledge in Gender Justice and Youth Justice. Her research delved into alterna- tives to punitive disciplinary policies affecting Black youth and youth of color. Bianca has provided vital domestic vi- olence and sexual assault services to Black women, youth, and LGBTQ+ individuals. She has also led political edu- cation groups for young people, including the Freedom Youth Squad, Black Girls Matter, and Books and Breakfast, fostering activism, cultural pride, and self-love. Bianca is unapologetically dedicated to Black liberation.

Chai Moua, born in Ban Vinai Refugee Camp, arrived in the United States at the age of two. With a Bachelor's Degree in Human Services Management and a Family Development Specialist Certification, Chai has over 20 years of experience working with low- to no-income communities, particularly within the Hmong community. Communities & Social Justice: The Mission of Freedom Inc.

F reedom, Inc. stands as a cornerstone non-profit organization dedicated to serving low- to no-income communities of color, particularly focusing on Black and Southeast Asian popula- tions. Founded with a mission to achieve social justice through a holistic approach that combines direct services, leadership development, and community organizing, we strive to bring about comprehensive change across social, political, cultural, and economic realms with the ultimate goal of eradicating violence against women, gen- der-non-conforming individuals, transgender folks, and children within communities of color. Rooted in a commitment to address the root caus- es of violence, poverty, racism, and discrimina- tion, we advocate for amplifying the voices, power, resources, and choices of those most impacted by these issues to drive meaningful societal transfor- mation. At the core of Freedom, Inc.'s organizational phi- losophy lies the belief that true social change ne- cessitates active engagement and leadership from

the communities directly affected by systemic injustices. This ethos is reflected in the unique governance structure of the organization, often likened to a flower. Rather than adhering to a traditional non-profit hierarchy, decision-mak- ing and coordination of activities are decen- tralized, with various committees forming the petals of the flower, encompassing areas such as youth programs, organizing, political educa- tion, and domestic violence services advocacy. The central focus remains on the community members themselves, who steer the direction of campaigns, strategies, and initiatives, ensuring that the voices of those served are at the fore- front of all endeavors. Within this innovative governance model, the staff plays a crucial role in facilitating commu- nication, identifying key priorities, and collab- orating with community leaders and elders to drive impactful change. By fostering ongoing dialogue and partnership, we sustain a culture of shared leadership and collective decision-mak-

ing that empowers individuals within the commu- nity to shape the organization's direction and im- pact. Additionally, the board shoulders financial and legal responsibilities while deferring to the expertise and guidance of the staff and communi- ty members in steering the organization towards its mission-driven goals and strategies. Central to the ethos of Freedom, Inc. is the mantra "Our community is our campaign," encapsulating a commitment to championing the needs and as- pirations of marginalized communities through inclusive, community-led initiatives. By prior- itizing the voices and experiences of those most vulnerable to violence, injustice, and inequality, we adopt a multi-faceted approach to achieving sustainable social change. Emphasizing leadership development, cross-sectional collaboration, and strategic goal-setting, we ensure that its efforts are

rooted in the empowerment and prosperity of its diverse constituents.

Founded in 2000 by Kabzuag Vaj, Freedom, Inc.'s origins trace back to the Asian Freedom Project, which provided a safe space for young Hmong women in Madison, WI to address pressing challenges. Over the years, we have evolved and expanded its reach to encompass Black and Southeast Asian youth, women, gen- der-nonconforming individuals, and LGBTQ communities. Through targeted programs tai- lored to the specific needs of elders, refugees, immigrants, differently-abled individuals, and the homeless within Black and Southeast Asian communities, we continue to forge ahead in its mission to foster equity, justice, and empower- ment for all.

also practical guidance on navigating the aftermath of traumatic experiences.

Safety planning is another essential service provided by Freedom Inc. as part of their gender justice initia- tives. Developing personalized safety plans tailored to the specific circumstances of survivors enables wom- en to navigate potential risks and threats effectively. These plans empower individuals to make informed decisions about their safety and well-being, fostering a sense of agency and control amidst challenging cir- cumstances. Our dedication to combating domestic violence and sexual assault through gender justice initiatives is further reinforced by their commitment to intersec- tionality. By acknowledging the unique experiences of women from diverse backgrounds, Freedom Inc. ensures that their services are culturally specific and inclusive. This approach recognizes the intersecting identities and challenges faced by Black, Hmong, Cambodian, and Queer communities, fostering strength and resilience from within.

One of the most pressing needs for indi- viduals impacted by domestic violence is safe housing. We acknowledge the impor- tance of stable housing as a fundamental aspect of recovery and security for sur- vivors. By providing housing assistance, they offer a pathway to stability and inde- pendence for women seeking refuge from abusive environments. In addition to addressing immediate needs, we emphasize economic advocacy as a critical component of gender justice. Economic empowerment plays a signifi- cant role in breaking the cycle of abuse and ensuring long-term security for sur- vivors. Through programs that focus on financial independence and stability, we equip women with the tools to rebuild their lives on their own terms.

Creating Safe and Inclusive Safe and Inclusive Learning Environments: Freedom Inc.'s Advocacy for Police-Free Schools

F reedom Inc. is at the forefront of advocating for Police-Free Schools, a critical initiative aimed at reimagining safety and well-being within educational settings. This movement seeks to address systemic issues around policing in schools and promote alternative approaches to discipline, con- flict resolution, and student support that prioritize equity, justice, and community well-being. By challenging the presence of law enforcement in educational spaces, we advocate for creating envi- ronments where students feel safe, respected, and empowered to thrive academically and personally. The concept of Police-Free Schools aligns with our overarching mission to achieve social justice and combat violence within marginalized communities. By advocating for the removal of police officers from schools, we aim to disrupt the school-to-prison pipeline, reduce instances of harmful inter- actions between law enforcement and students, and create a more nurturing and inclusive learning environment for all. Through a lens of racial and social justice, we underscore the importance of ad- dressing the disproportionate impact of policing on Black, Southeast Asian, and other communities of color within school settings. In collaboration with community stakeholders, educators, and advocacy groups, we work tirelessly to raise awareness about the implications of police presence in schools and advocate for alternative approaches that prioritize restorative justice, mental health support, and community-based solu- tions. By engaging in dialogue, organizing campaigns, and mobilizing grassroots efforts, we amplifiy the voices of students, parents, and educators who seek to create safer, more equitable educational spaces free from the influence of law enforcement.

16 | freedom-inc.org

One of the key pillars of our advocacy for Police-Free Schools is the promotion of restorative justice practices as a viable alternative to traditional punitive measures. Restorative justice emphasizes ac- countability, healing, and reconciliation, focusing on repairing harm and fostering understanding within the school community. By prioritizing restorative justice over punitive discipline, we advocate for building relationships, promoting empathy, and resolving conflicts in a manner that uplifts the voices and experiences of students while fostering a sense of collective responsibility and communal support. Through its advocacy efforts, we shed light on the need to invest in mental health resources, coun- seling services, and social-emotional support within schools as proactive measures to address un- derlying issues that may lead to disruptive behavior. By advocating for increased funding for mental health professionals, social workers, and culturally competent support staff, we believe the impor- tance of addressing the root causes of behavioral challenges and providing students with the tools and resources they need to succeed academically and emotionally.
