Introduce the Concept

Build Background Knowledge • Read aloud the Get Curious Question: What does it mean to try hard? • Share with children that learning something new takes effort. When we try to learn something new, we don’t always get it right the first time. It takes hard work! • Point out an example on the Module 5 Poster of a child who is trying hard or practicing a skill. Then have children share more examples from the poster and their own lives. Use words and pictures to record ideas on chart paper. • Use ECHO READING (GPS, p. 00) to read the quotation from Helen Keller on the Module 5 Poster: ”We can do anything we want if we stick to it long enough.” • Tell children about Helen Keller and talk about the meaning of the quotation. ”Stick to it” is another way of saying “to keep trying.” So Helen Keller is saying that you can do anything if you keep trying. ENGLISH LEARNER SUPPORT: BASIC VOCABULARY BEGINNING: Point to playground objects on the Module 5 Poster such as the slide , ladder, and soccer ball. Say the words and have children repeat them chorally. INTERMEDIATE: Provide a simple sentence frame for children to describe the playground objects on the Module 5 Poster : I see a _______. ADVANCED/ADVANCED HIGH: Have partners take turns asking questions about favorite playground activities. What do you like to do at recess? I like to _______.



• Build background knowledge about perseverance and make personal connections to the concept. • Identify examples and non- examples of perseverance. • Pronounce new concept words and listen to their meanings. • Respond to questions using new concept words and complete sentences. MATERIALS • Module 5 Poster: I Can Do It! • Display and Engage: Big Idea Words 5 • Chart paper and markers Mindset Focus: Perseverance • Explain the meaning of perseverance and point out examples as children encounter them throughout Module 5. If you persevere, you don’t give up when something is hard. You keep trying! • Give targeted feedback when you notice children showing perseverance. At recess today, I saw you use perseverance on the monkey bars. You tried really hard until you made it to the other side! K.3E Students react and respond to a variety of sources that are read, heard, or viewed. The student is expected to respond using newly acquired vocabulary as appropriate.

Who Said It? After becoming sick as a baby, Helen Keller (1880–1968) could not see or hear. When Helen was seven years old, a teacher taught her how to use sign language to talk to people. Helen practiced and tried very hard. Soon she was able to speak, read, and write.

Access Prior Knowledge • Introduce the topic “I Can Do It!” and share Module 5 Poster with the class. We’re going to be learning about how trying hard can help us reach our goals! • Share a personal story about something that you are trying hard to learn. • Give examples and non-examples of trying hard and have children use THUMBS UP OR DOWN (GPS, p. 00) to agree or disagree. Try these ideas or personalize them for your class. NON-EXAMPLES Spending recess learning hopscotch Scribbling your name on a paper as fast as you can Drawing a detailed picture of your favorite toy Quitting a game when you don’t understand the rules Practicing riding a bike every day after school Saying you can’t play drums after trying one time EXAMPLES

Use your words! Look for chances to use the Big Idea

Words every day, and encourage children to use the words when they talk about books and write about themselves. You can even share the words with art, music, or P.E. teachers to use during their classes.

Develop Concept Language

Use the VOCABULARY routine below to teach the Big Idea Words for “I Can Do It!” 1 Say the word. Ask children to look at the word and repeat it. 2 Explain the meaning. Read aloud the child-friendly meaning. 3 Talk about examples. Use the Module 5 Poster to give examples.




When you practice something, you do it over and over again to get better. If you feel proud of yourself, you are happy with something you did that took hard work. If you have success with something you try, it means you do it well.

The boy will practice tying his shoes until he can do it on his own. The girl feels proud that she can hula hoop for a full minute.

Use the DISPLAY AND ENGAGE: BIG IDEA WORDS 5 to have children practice using the new words. Read aloud each question and sentence frame. Ask partners to use TURN AND TALK (GPS p. 00) to respond using the Big Idea Words.
