2 General Design Applications General Design

SIBA HV Fuses are constructed with parallel connected pure silver fuse elements. The design and methods of production of the elements ensure narrow tolerances of time-current characteristics. The fuse elements are wound on a ceramic support and are attached to the silver plated connection caps by means of spot welding. The connection end caps are fitted inside the silver plated copper end caps by spot welding. The copper end caps are press fitted onto the porcelain which are glazed inside and outside. The end caps are mechanically fixed to the tube made of a high grade technical ceramic tube, and additionally sealed with a durable elastic sealing medium. This method has been proven over many decades of positive field experience and ensures tightness against ingress of water vapor.

Applications

High Voltage fuses (HV fuses) are used as protection devices in medium voltage switchgear. The great advantage is the very fast current-limiting operation in the event of short-circuit failures, consequently, protecting the switchgear and equipment against dynamic thermal effects of such short-circuits in a very effective way.

4 Technical Variables

The technical datum are based on tests which were accomplished to the appropriate national or international standards in accredited test laboratories or in the company laboratory. If not otherwise indicated, the datum were acquired with an ambient temperature of Ա& - 25ºC in calm air. The tests were done with new fuses, without preloading and from a cold condition.

Time-current characteristics

The operational behavior of the fuse is defined by its time-current characteristics and is given as the arithmetic average of a set of electrical tests plotted on a double logarithmic diagram. The general tolerance of the characteristic is ± 10% in the of the current. The broken line indicates that the fuse is not able to interrupt over currents in this range.

Cut-off current diagram

The diagram serves to determine the maximum cut-off current as a peak value, depending on the possible prospective current. Determined values, refers to an operating frequency of 50 cycles. Higher frequency of operation leads to higher values of cut-off current and lower frequencies of operation lead to lower values.

Melting and Operating Integrals

The datum apply to the current-limiting range of the fuses with fusing times lower than10ms. If not specifically designated, the melting integral is given as a minimum value and the operating integral is indicated as a maximum value. The values of the operating integral are usually indicated for the rated voltage of the fuse. Lower load voltages leads to smaller values of the operating integral.

Power dissipation (loss)

The power loss (heat) which is converted by the fuse loaded with its rated current under specified conditions. Indicated document values can possibly differ remarkably from actual measured values, as different installation conditions are not considered.

Rated current I n

The current value, according to IEC 60282-1, that a HV fuse can carry continuously under speci fied conditions. Determined figures are both the free in air mounting, as well as a maximum ambient temperature of 40°C.

Rating I

In some fuses, a double designation is used to specify a current, e.g. 200RC140A. The first value designates the time- current characteristic, such as 200A in this example. The “RC”, which stands for “Rated Current“, is followed by the rated current, which considers the maximum permissible warming of the fuse under normative conditions. In the example this is 140A.

Minimum breaking current and class

Minimum value of a prospective current, which a fuse is able to interrupt at a stated voltage under prescribed conditions; • • • Maximum breaking current (breaking capacity) Maximum value of a prospective current, given in kA, which a fuse is able to interrupt at a stated voltage under prescribed conditions. Back-up: given by the manufacture Full-range: current which causes melting equal to the fuses rated current General-purpose: melting time • 1 hour

Cut-off current

Maximum peak value which occurs during the switching process of the fuse.

Rated voltage U n

The range of application is given by two different voltages, a lower and upper value, e.g. 6/12kV. The first being the lower value represented here as 6kV reflects the minimum operating voltage and the higher value 12kV the maximum operating voltage that the fuse is allowed to operate with. The higher voltage is named "Rated Voltage" according to the definition of IEC 60282-1.

5 Application Guide Replacement of HV Fuses in 3-phase systems

The standards, IEC 60282-1 and VDE 0670 – part 4, recommends that in a 3-phase system, that if a fuse activates in any of the phases, that fuses in all three of the phases be replaced.

HV Fuses for transformer protection

To protect transformers in distribution networks, back-up fuses are mainly used. To ensure for a suitable protection, the values of selection according to VDE 0670 part 402, table 2 may be applied. The extended tables based on this are included in the technical annex. These tables give recommendations for transformer ratings of 50kVA - 2000kVA and are separated into three different applications, which consider the concept of protection on the secondary side of the transformer:

HV Fuses for the protection of motor circuits

Fuses for motor circuits are designed to protect motor switches against unacceptably high over currents, which may cause contact welding. Moreover, in case of short-circuits, they have to be able to provide interruption within milliseconds to protect the circuit against the dynamic effects of such currents. If determined correctly, all HV fuses from SIBA can be used in motor circuits. However, SIBA also offers special HV fuses for motor circuits that function as back-up fuses developed with the requirements of motor circuits in mind. To select the right fuse for a given motor, not only the operating current must be borne in mind, but also the motor startup current as well as the number and duration of startups. The resulting rated current can well be a multiple of the motor current. When taking into account cyclical loads and high ambient temperatures, high voltage motors with reduced startup current also should be protected by fuses whose rated current depending on the type is in the range of 1.3 to 2 times the operating current.

In order to determine the rated current for the fuse type required, diagrams are supplied by which the rated current can be deduced from the motor startup current, startup time and startup frequency, thus being able to determine the correct fuse.

HV Fuses for potential transformer protection

Although HV fuses are not able to protect potential transformers efficiently in the case of an internal fault, fuses should be installed as according to the requirements of VDE 0101. In the case of a fault the voltage transformer shall be disconnected from the supply fast as possible in order to limit the fault effects. This is why HV fuses of lowest rated currents are recommended.

HV Fuses for capacitor protection

Whenever capacitors are connected to a network or to a capacitor bank, high inrush peak currents, the peak, the size and duration depend on;

Capacitor size Frequency and inductance of network The closing angle of operation.

In order to withstand the higher harmonics and to reduce temperature rise, the rated current of the fuses should be at least 2 times the capacitor bank rated current. Increased transient voltages during switching can never be excluded. HV fuses of the next highest voltage range must be used for safety reasons. A selection table classifying HV fuses with the corresponding voltage capacitors is included in the technical annex.

6 Discrimination requirements

Discrimination between HV Fuses

Discrimination problems may occur when distant branch stations in the supply nets are protected by HV fuses in line. In this case the rated current of the upstream fuse should be increased by a factor of 2.

Discrimination between HV and LV Fuses

To prevent the possibility of HV fuse interruption due to a low voltage side fault, a sufficient discrimination must be secured. For comparison, the time-current curves of both fuses have to be converted either to the low voltage or the high voltage level. This is especially important if several LV fuses in parallel are operated in the low voltage output. The fuse with the highest rated current is decisive for discrimination. This operating mode requires comparison of time/current characteristics of the HV fuses with the interrupting to the low voltage characteristics of the designated circuit breaker. For this purpose the time-current characteristics of the HV fuses are level and then compared with the breaker relay characteristics. Sufficient discrimination is given for this operation mode converted when the fuses clear the fault before the circuit breaking capacity is reached. 7 Striker Pin SIBA HV fuses are available with striker pins of force:

50 N (Part No. 30 … y6) variant-type, motor and capacitor fuses. 80 N (Part No. 30 … 13) basic-type, general and DIN style motor fuses. 120 N (Part No. 30 … 14) variant-type, general and DIN style motor fuses.

The characteristics of both striker pins correspond to IEC 60282-1, VDE 0670 Part 4, and are of the category “medium”. The striker pin system is connected by means of a high resistance parallel conductor. After melting the main fuse elements, the striker pin indicates the operating status of the fuse and can actuate a microswitch for remote indication and/or can trigger a loadbreak switch or a circuit breaker to open. SIBA HV fuses have four basic configurations concerning "Striker" utilization, none , i.e. no striker is incorporated in the fuse and will have a 1 suffix before the .(Amp) rating and is indicated in the fuse article number as 30xxxy1.(Amp). The 80N(Newton's of force) can be incorporated in DIN style fuses with current ratings ranging from 2A to160A and will have a 3 suffix before the .(Amp) rating and is indicated in the article number as 30xxxy 3 .(Amp). The 120N striker is available on DIN style fuses rated 200A and greater will have a 4 suffix before the .(Amp) and is indicated in the fuse article number as 30xxxy4.(Amp). Exceptions to this are the motor R-rated fuses with an R suffix at the end of the article number designation and has the article designation 30xxxy5.zz R . For ratings  6R the striker withstand force is 80N and for ratings   9R the striker

withstand force is120N. Other specialty fuses that utilize different body styles, such as for under oil, capacitor and motor applications which may utilize the 50N striker will have the suffix number 6 before the .(Amp) in the article number and the article number is displayed as 30xxxy6.(Amp). 8 Temperature Limiter

• • Indication and switching function in case the fuse operates Protection of the fuse enclosure of SF6 switchgear against inadmissible temperature rise. All SIBA 80N striker pin systems are fitted with an integrated temperature limiter. Consequently each SIBA 80N striker pin has two functions:

SF6-insulated switchgear requires additional protection features against inadmissible temperatures of certain switchgear parts. The integrated temperature limiter avoids unacceptably high temperatures - no matter how they are generated in gas- insulated switchgear or narrow switchgear enclosures. By means of a melting activator, temperature inside the fuse enclosure is limited to below 100ºC. This design especially considers continuity of current to end user for as long as possible. The system reacts in such a way that short time overloads do not cause the fuse to interrupt the circuit unnecessarily. Only when values inadmissible are exceeded, the fuse will open the switch via the striker pin.

Higher temperatures on plastic fuse enclosures in SF6-insulated switchgear can be caused by:

Selection of a fuse rating too low for proper transformer protection Fuses loaded with fault currents below the minimum breaking current Deterioration of fuses caused by transient fault currents (e.g. lightning strike)

1 Application Range Types

SIBA HHD current-limiting series of fuses are rated up to 40.5kV and comply to the following national and international standards;

The design and construction of these fuses follow the well proven concepts of all SIBA high voltage fuses. For pressure resistant encapsulation, a high grade ceramic is utilized. Contact material consists of silver plated high conductivity copper. The pure silver melting elements have appropriate notching profiles to ensure small time-current curve tolerances and low let through currents. The arc quenching quartz sand is subjected to particular criteria regarding its composition, grain size and water content. A classical standard current-limiting “Back-Up” fuse for transformer protection, this type series meets the special requirements set for the area of application. As a back-up fuse, it interrupts currents from 3 to 4 times the rated current all the way to the rated breaking current, making short circuit protection its main area of application. HHD-B fuses are available for rated voltage ranges of 3/7.2kV, 6/12kV, 10/17.5kV, 10/24kV, 20/36kV, 38.5kV and 40.5kV. HHD-FR - Full Range, Transformer and Capacitor Applications These newly introduced SIBA DIN high voltage current-limiting fuses with “Full-Range” rating with voltage ratings of 6/12kV and 10/24kV are designed to meet the special requirements for transformers requiring this type of rating. These fuses have an interrupt rating of 80kA. HHD-G - General Purpose, Transformer Application The SIBA "General Purpose" fuses under fixed conditions can interrupt all currents, from rated breaking currents all the way down to the current that in one hour or less triggers the fuse striker. At a melting time of one hour, the melting current usually lies between a multiple of 1.5 to 2 of the rated current. These fuses are therefore deployed for overload protection purposes. SIBA offers these fuses for rated voltage ranges of 6/12kV and 10/24kV. HHD-BSSK - Back UP "SSK", Transformer Application The SIBA DIN HV "SSK" current-limiting "Back-Up" fuse model has been specially designed to harmonize with switchgear installations. It was constructed for short fuse-initiated opening times of the switch and low take-over currents. Together with switch-fuse combinations, and under certain conditions, SIBA HHD "SSK" fuses can be used for transformers with higher power ratings. The fuses are available for rated voltage ranges of 6/12kV,10/24kV, 20/36kV and 40.5kV. SIBA HHM and HHM "R"-rated current-limiting "Back-Up" fuses are designed for the rugged demands of motor circuit protection applications. The fuse elements have been optimized to deal with cyclic loads typical for motor circuits and power dissipation compared to commonly used HV fuses. Fuses are available for rated voltages of 3/3.6kV, 3/7.2kV and 6/12kV. HHD-BR function in the same way as HHD-BM fuses, but are tailored to meet the ANSI C37.46 standard. HHD-BM and BMR series fuses are offered for rated voltages between 2.4kV and 7.2 kV. SIBA HHPT fuses for the protection of PT circuits are current-limiting "Back-Up" fuses designed to interrupt short- circuit currents. Due to the high breaking currents, the fault current will be limited and finally quenched in a few milli- seconds. Some fuses include a striker pin for visual indication. This feature allows remote indication of the fuse operation for direct tripping of a circuit breaker. Fuses with striker pins have rated currents of 2A, 3.15A, 4A and 5A. Lower rated current 0.5A and 1A fuses are without a striker pin. DIN style PT fuses have a diameter of 53 mm and a length depending on the fuses rated voltage. The preferred lengths can be found in selection HHD of our catalog. These fuses are available for a rated voltage of 3/7.2kV, 6/12kV, 10/17.5kV, 10/24kV, 20/36kV, 38.5kV and 40.5kV. HHOZ-B, HHOZ-G and HHOD-B - Under Oil for Transformer Application

This line of current-limiting back-up rated fuses are designed for under oil use within the transformer. DIN standards are utilized in sizing. The available rated voltage is 24kV.

2 Application recommendations

Recommendations for selecting the right SIBA fuses for the three main areas of application can be found at the end of the chapter on HHD fuses. Using the tables provided one can determine which fuse might be suitable for the application. Please keep in mind, though, that these are approximations only, which may not fit your specific requirements in each case. If in doubt, it is recommended that you contact us.

It is mandatory to ensure that the correct graph be utilized for the selected "Product Group" for determining the fuses' current rating, otherwise malfunctions may occur. IEC 60644 defines the "k-factor", which in principle is a safety factor. The SIBA graphs include this safety factor, therefore, the complicated handling of this factor can be avoided without compromising safety. Whenever possible, fuses with "Back-Up Motor" characteristics are to be used due to their very low power losses. If in doubt, SIBA should be consulted.

Selection

Fuse Selection requires the need to consider the following parameters; • Motor Data - Rated Voltage(U M-Rated ), Power Factor(cosϕ M ), Rated Power(P M-Rated ) and (IILFLHQF\ Ѡ M ). • System Data - Run up time, number of starts per hour - Maximum two starts permissible in succession. • Fuse Preselection - Rated voltage and mechanical dimensions according to operating and assembly requirements. • Motor Starting Current - (If not known, typical is 6xI M-FLC ), FLC - F ull L oad C urrent of motor. • Check - that the rated current of motor is < 70% of the fuses current rating, if not use next higher current rating and recheck that proper usage has been achieved. • Consult SIBA in cases of special conditions that are not considered standard such as, maximum temperature > Ա& run-up times > 60s, number of starts > 32/h, auto transformer or soft start. If in doubt about the application, please contact us to assist for proper fuse performance.

Protection of Capacitors

Recommendation for the protection of capacitors with HHD fuses to DIN standard.

Assignment of rated currents of HHD fuses to capacitor ratings. To control the occurring voltage during switch off, the fuse should be chosen with the next higher range, e.g. for a capacitor voltage at 10kV the fuse should be rated 20kV - see IEC 60549, Chapter II, Para 3.2.
