tories and failed. Tom Davis, Langston’s president at the time, reimbursed Star for the cost of the machine and took it back. Star replaced the Titan with a United Flexus die cut- ter, which performed well until the closure of the facility. At some point, an inline shrink tunnel was added so that pizza boxes and trays could be produced without human intervention from conveyorized sheet insertion to convey- orized discharge. In 1998, Star acquired the building next door and rede- signed the entire first floor, including the die cutting oper- ation, with automated sheet delivery from the corrugator to this department and possibly an automated high bay warehouse for finished goods, which Etra had researched in Germany and Switzerland.

The two buildings were connected in 1999 and the United die cutter and a new computerized Bobst 4115 spe- cialty folder/gluer were installed in accordance with this plan. However, further action was not to be. Almost all of Star’s shareholders were absentee own- ers and no longer wanted to invest in the company. The Cascades Cabano mill had become a major supplier of Star’s medium and after Norampac was created, the close relationship between the companies eventually led to dis- cussions with Norampac management about acquiring the company. In 2001, Star was sold to Norampac and re- named Norampac New York City. The plant continued to operate and produce a large volume of corrugated products but, eventually, its con- straints were incompatible with modern corrugators and converting equipment, the cost of manufacturing in New York City became unsustainable, and its real estate value became astronomical. Cascades began planning a new facility in Piscataway, New Jersey, and the Star’s days in Maspeth were num- bered. It continued producing while the new facility was being built, and finally ceased operations in July of 2018. The equipment was sold off or scrapped, but that’s anoth- er story for another day.
