Experiential Learning with Northern Illinois University by Kristina McWethy

This spring, Crest Foods’ Stabilizer Systems Division teamed up with Northern Illinois University’s College of Business Experiential Learning Center (ELC). The ELC’s goal is to provide real world experience for a group of NIU students, while simultaneously providing measurable value to the sponsoring company. A group of 5 graduate and undergrad students were hand selected by ELC leadership to serve as consultants for Crest Foods. This group was tasked with helping Crest Foods de- velop a marketing and communication strategy specific to Millennial and Gen Z demograph-

ics that would serve to deepen market penetration and increase customer acquisitions. Crest Foods’ internal team consisted of Nate McKnight – Director of Sales and Technical Service, Laura Tewnion – New Business Develop- ment, Janet Sutton – Customer Relations Manager and Kristina McWethy – Marketing Manager. From January 19 through April 22, the Crest Foods and NIU teams met virtually 1-2x weekly to discuss the com- pany, industry landscape and research presented by the ELC consultants. The semester culminated with a final pre- sentation on April 22. The final presentation uncovered 9 marketing channels for consideration by Crest Foods, along with best practice strategies for each. This was a brand new partnership experience for Crest Foods and a lot was learned in the process. It was interesting to have a fresh perspective on our communication tactics and explore further enhancements to better reach our target audience in this ever-changing landscape. Thank you to NIU’s Experiential Learning Center for reaching out to us on this initiative! Weight Loss Challenge! What do The Chunky Cheetahs, Starved, Sweaty & Ready, To Be A New, 815 Eats A-Lot and Drop it like it’s Hot have in common? Weight Loss! These are all teams sponsored by Crest Foods in the KSB Hospital 2021 Jackpot Challenge. This weight loss con- test ran from January 7th until April 1st. A total of 23 teams registered. Teams were challenged to lose 6% body weight as a team. Crest people (39 of them) were big losers! Five of our six teams hit their goal this year with the #1 weight loss team being the Chunky Cheetahs at 8.3%. What a great program to start the new year off right!
