OUR RESOLUTIONS STRIVING INTO 2019

VIP Referral Patient of the Month!

LISA AND JASON COPPOLA

Whenever the new year rolls around, I find myself reflecting on the past. Our clinic and the practice of physical therapy itself have changed a lot since we first opened our doors. If you had told me back in 2005 that we’d someday be treating injuries with lasers at our clinic, I would have asked you if we were hiring Klingons. But no matter how much our clinic has grown and our methods of care have advanced, one thing has stayed the same: We have some of the most loyal patients in the world. 2019 marks our 14th year in business, which is still hard for me to wrap my head around. We could not have made it this far without such a fantastic, supportive community around us. We’ve been lucky to get to know so many families who have trusted us with their care over the years, and we want to remain worthy of that trust. That’s why we take this time of year to look at ways to streamline our systems and improve on the kinds of care we offer. Think of it as a kind of New Year’s resolution for the clinic as a whole. Expanding our home care services is one of our goals for 2019. The population is aging, and we understand that some folks have a hard time getting to the clinic for the care they need. So we figured why not come to you? From what we’ve seen so far, people have responded well to the program. The very pain we treat can often keep patients from actually getting to the clinic. It’s a great feeling to be able to get these folks moving “It’s a great feeling to be able to get these folks moving and feeling better around their own homes.”

and feeling better around their own homes. If we can expand our ability to provide at-home care in the coming year, we may well be aiding more people than ever before, which is what our job is all about. We’re fired up to make this resolution a reality. On a personal level, my resolution (as it is every year) is to try to keep up with my kids. This means taking care of my body however I can. Type 2 diabetes runs in my family, and I never want the day to come when I can’t help my daughter practice for softball season or run down the sidelines at my son’s lacrosse games. Every morning, I go for a run. I’m not the biggest fan of running; I would prefer going to the gym. But my morning route lets me get back early enough that the kids are still getting ready for school and we can eat breakfast together. After all, I’m keeping fit so I can spend time with my kids — it would be pretty hypocritical to spend that time at a gym instead. So here I am, facing down two important goals this year. If I’ve learned anything from the past 13 years, it’s that there is no substitute for hard work and dedication. On my morning runs around town, I’m constantly reminded of how lucky we are to call this community home. We know that you have your pick of the litter when it comes to physical therapy care. Thank you for choosing us throughout the years. We will always strive to exceed your expectations.

The best compliment we can receive is to have one of our patients refer a friend or family member to our practice. If you refer someone and we are able to take them as a patient, both you and the person who was referred

Thank You! will be entered to win a $25 gift card! It’s just our way of saying

And from all of us at the clinic, Happy New Year!

Mom Really Does Know Best

3 WIVES’ TALES PROVEN TRUE “Make a face like that, and it’ll stay that way forever.” You may have heard something like this from Mom’s book of wisdom. Maybe you never disputed the idea that mother knows best. But as you grew up, it slowly became clear that hair doesn’t grow back faster and thicker if you shave it, cracking your knuckles doesn’t cause arthritis, and gum doesn’t stay in your stomach for months after you swallow it. After a whirlwind of wives’ tales over the years, many common claims have been put under scrutiny. Wives’ tales have been known as pseudoscience and blind intuition, but even as many were disproved, some surprisingly proved to hold weight. Here are three wives’ tales that have proven to be true. GARLIC CURES COLDS For decades, moms have professed the healing properties of garlic, suggesting it can cure colds and help the body fight sickness. It turns out they were absolutely right. Garlic has antiviral properties that strengthen the immune system and nutrients that help combat illnesses. The effects of garlic can actually be more effective than over-the-counter flu medications. Some studies show that regular consumption of raw garlic lessens the likelihood of getting a cold, so if you feel a tickle in your throat, try a clove before you open the medicine cabinet. HEARTBURN MEANS A HAIRY BABY It’s hard to list wives’ tales without bringing up one about pregnancy. Many are solely based on intuition, but a few that sound odd are legitimate. In 2007, a study done by Johns Hopkins attempted to debunk the myth that heartburn during pregnancy would mean a hairy baby at birth. Instead of proving it wrong, they found that 82 percent of women with severe heartburn during pregnancy gave birth to hairy babies. Turns out the hormones that cause heartburn in pregnant women also affect fetal hair growth. JOINT PAIN PREDICTS THE WEATHER Did you ever look at your mom with skepticism when she would predict rain because her knees hurt? If so, you might owe your mom an apology, because there is a scientific connection. The drop in barometric pressure that’s common during storm weather causes pain in arthritic joints.

“I was in a lot of pain when I started therapy and could not bend my knee. Now I have my range of motion back thanks to everyone and am pain-free. Considering the severity of my injury, I am very glad I came here as the therapists kept working with me to get better.” –Nancy W.

SHRUG THROUGH THE WINTER BY STOPPING SHOULDER PAIN Don’t Let the Weather Give You the Cold Shoulder

Whether you’re a pitcher for the Yankees or a custodian at an elementary school, few things can derail your daily routine like a shoulder injury. Lack of mobility, aches and pains, and decreased function can keep you from doing the things you love. Unfortunately, when the roads freeze over and black ice lurks in our driveways, there is no shortage of ways to end up in an aching bind during the wintertime. If an accident doesn’t get you, the cold weather and conditions themselves can exacerbate a pre-existing injury. You don’t really want to be singing the blues around the holidays. Luckily, an early intervention can keep you from being doomed to pilot the couch through the new year. While we often blame shoulder pain on factors like overuse, injury, or poor body mechanics, we know cold weather is a major contributing factor. Low temperatures are known to exacerbate underlying aches and pains, seemingly without any provocation. As such, winter is often the most painful season for people suffering from shoulder injuries.

It often boils down to blood flow. When your system is perpetually shocked by dramatic changes and freezing temperatures, your circulatory system can struggle to supply your body with an ample amount of blood. Poor circulation in turn causes rigid muscles and tendons, and that can cause severe pain as the whole human machine continues to stiffen. Since many of these issues stem from a previous injury to the tissue, it can take some time to get your pain back down to a manageable level. Start by ensuring that your surroundings are comfortably warm. It might be worthwhile to invest in a snowblower, a heated ice scraper, nonslip footwear, heating pads, and maybe a sturdier shovel. If all else fails — and it just may — you can always rely on your trusted friends at Cornerstone PT & Wellness Center for the best care around. With a smile and a light pat on the shoulder, we’ll see to it that you’re up and running, ready for the new year.

PEANUT BUTTER AND BERRY FRENCH TOAST

French toast is a staple for a weekend breakfast at home, but this version takes things to another level. Consider it a hybrid of French toast and PB&J. It’s just as delicious as it sounds.

INGREDIENTS

• 8 slices brioche, 1/2-inch thick • 1/4 cup creamy peanut butter • 2 large eggs • 1/8 cup heavy cream • 2 teaspoons pure vanilla extract

• 2 cups cornflakes • 2 tablespoons unsalted butter • 2 cups mixed berries • Powdered sugar, to sprinkle • Maple syrup, for serving

DIRECTIONS

1. On a large baking sheet lined with wax paper, place 4 slices of brioche and spread 1 tablespoon of peanut butter on each. Cover with remaining slices, creating sandwiches. 2. In a pie plate, beat eggs with cream and vanilla. In another, coarsely crush the cornflakes. 3. Lightly soak sandwiches in the egg mixture, then dredge in cornflakes, pressing to adhere. Return to baking sheet. 4. In a large skillet over medium heat, melt 1 tablespoon butter. Once melted and up to temperature, add sandwiches, cooking on one side until golden and crisp, about 2–3 minutes. 5. Return sandwiches to baking sheet, add remaining butter, and repeat on other side. 6. Top sandwiches with berries, sprinkle with powdered sugar, and serve with maple syrup.

The location’s beauty is only part of your stimulating experience, because every curve of fresh powder makes your pupils dilate. Once you’re done flying down the hill where Bode Miller took the bronze, head over to the winter wonderland of the old Olympic Village for a cozy night in a picturesque town.

BRECKENRIDGE, COLORADO

John Denver’s anthem “Rocky Mountain High” is about the freedom he felt here. Where there are great mountains, there’s even better snow. The ski resort boasts five peaks, 187 trails, 34 lifts, four terrain parks, and a renowned cross-country trail. After a day on the slopes, head into the town of Breckenridge for dining and activities that ditch the glitz and glamour of Vail or Aspen and take you straight to the heart of fun.
