Introduction
Course Lead: Samuel Moore Unlock the spontaneous nature of Flamenco performance! While most flamenco guitar students have a good working knowledge of technique and are confident when playing pre-composed material, if asked to perform in a more traditional manner, where spontaneous elements are required, many struggle. This unique flamenco course, taught by the critically acclaimed flamenco guitarist and educator Samuel Moore, seeks to address this. Central to its philosophy is the notion that mastering simple compá s (rhythm) ideas (in the context of different palos) and learning how to integrate them with other performance components (such as falsetas and llamadas) is the key to unlocking flamenco’s spontaneous performance elements at a basic level.
Course Outline This course is accessible for both flamenco aficionados and those who are new to the art form. It is suitable for intermediate level guitarists (eg 2+ yrs playing) but prior experience of flamenco guitar is not essential.
During this course you'll explore four of the most important flamenco palos:
Tangos Soleá Alegrías Bulerías
By the end of the course you’ll have mastered these palo's most important spontaneous performance elements, learnt how to integrate them into your playing and ultimately taken your knowledge of flamenco to the next level!
Hailed as “a fantastic flamenco guitarist” (BBC Radio 3) and honoured as a First Category prizewinner in the 2023 Manhattan International Music Competition, Samuel Moore is fast establishing himself as one of the leading flamenco musicians of his generation. When not on tour or recording, Samuel enjoys passing on his musical knowledge through teaching. He is the author of the ‘ Flamenco Guitar Compás Essentials’ book series. Samuel learnt his craft as a one-to-one student of the world- renowned flamenco guitarists: Juan Martín, Grisha Goryachev and Dennis Koster. About Samuel Moore Lead Tutor
He has also attended workshops led by Paco Peña. Samuel is an alumnus of Leeds Conservatoire, class of 2013.

FAQs Do I need to read music?
Can I share my room? Accommodation in student rooms is strictly single-occupancy. If you would like an extra room for friends/family let us know. Can friends/family come to concerts? Yes! Please invite them to your student concert (free entry). Summer school students can go to any of the lunchtime and evening concerts free of charge. Others can purchase a ticket when they go on sale closer to the event.
No. As flamenco is primarily an aural tradition, reading from music is not required. Students are encouraged to bring their phones to make recordings of what they have learnt. I’m a beginner, will it be right for me? Students can be new to flamenco guitar but should have at least 1-2 yrs playing experience in another style.
What preparation do I need to do?
Students with no background in flamenco should work on some of the basic flamenco techniques: rasgueo, thumb rest stroke and arpeggio so that they can focus on language during the course and not get bogged down in technique.
Not sure? Get in touch, we’d love to hear from you!

Support IGF
Can you help support our work with children and young professionals ?
IGF's Young Artist Platform (YAP) provides concert opportunities around the UK and a comprehensive training programme. YAP is indispensable for young professional guitarists and it has helped launch the careers of a host of successful artists. Guitar Circus (music education in schools) In recent times music education in schools has been steadily reduced, we at IGF are filling this void by offering great music education experiences to schools free of charge. We need your support to ensure no child misses out on the transformative power of music.
