211 is getting a helping hand

situations. People can call highly trained opera- tors seven days a week, 24 hours a day, 365 days a year. The operators can relay information on where to find food banks, mental health clinics, and even play groups. Though not yet operating across Canada, Dens- more is working on having it available nationwide. The program is a multi-lingual, confidental call centre offering information to those in need. “There is always a line answered. It’s multi- lingual. The key we want to emphasize is that its available 24-7, 365 days a year. Some emergency services aren’t always available. This one is. The program offers proximity mapping, so services can be offered in the area needed.”

Densmore pointed out that 211 will also be an invaluable support should there ever be a disaster in the area. “The first disaster is the disaster itself,” said Densmore. “The second disaster is people looking for information.” Instead of blocking up emergency lines, people can call in to 211 to find out what is going on, where loved ones might be, how long the crisis will last, and where to go for help. Densmore andHalderson askedMayor Barton if it would be possible to support the programby recommending it to the citizens of Champlain, and by putting the 211 logo on the website. “We won’t be putting it on the website just yet,” said Mayor Barton.

“For information sake, if I had amental health issue and I called, would you be able to sendme to the right place?” askedMayor Barton. “I don’t have to give my name or gender?” Densmore assured council members that the calls were confidential, however for statistics’ sake, location of calls are recorded and someone who is in danger, such as an Alzheimer’s patient looking for help, will be followed up on. w“The program is not just about poverty or mental health,” Densmore explained. “People can call to get information on food banks andmental health clinics, but you can also get information on where the closest play group is.”

Executive director of United Way/Centraide of Prescott Russell introduced the new 211 ou- treach coordinator, TimHalderson, at the Cham- plain Township council meeting December 9. “He will be with us for the next four months,” explained Densmore. “He is here to help promote 211. With 34 ½ years as a police officer, he knows what it takes to help.” The 211 program is a single province wide database withmore than 60,000 community and social services across Ontario. It is much like the 911 emergency hot line, but for non-emergent
