GOVT. PROPOSES ADVANCEMENTS IN IRISH DISTRICT ENERGY SECTOR

The long-awaited District Heating Steering Group Report 2023 was released by the government, presenting 11 recommendations to bolster the growth and development of Ireland’s district energy sector. Yvonne Murphy, CEO of the Irish District Energy, hailed the report as a crucial moment for the district energy sector, signaling Ireland’s commitment to decarbonized heat. The report outlines key aspects such as financing, consumer protections, regulation, and planning. With a potential of up to 54% of heat in buildings to be supplied by district heating, Ireland sees it as a vital component in its plan to decarbonise the built environment, diversify heat sources, and enhance quality of life. The ambitious targets set by the government aim to supply approximately 200,000 homes and 2500 public/ commercial buildings with low-cost, low- carbon heat by 2030. To achieve this, an estimated €2.5 billion investment will be required, creating over 2,000 full-time jobs over the next decade. The District Heating Steering Group formulated the recommendations, including establishing a National District Heating Centre of Excellence, enhancing existing projects, and conducting a Long-Term Strategy for district energy.
