with authority and not as the scribes. The scribes seemed to have no per sonal conviction about the truths they taught, but were merely repeating what others had said before them concerning the Word of God. But the Lord Jesus taught with the qertainty of understanding and the insight of , perfect knowledge. Unlike others, to whom the Word of the Lord came. He was that Word Himself (cf. John 6:68). The hearers -.were astonished, but would yield no obedience to what was taught. Hence what they heard was of no practical value to them. Like wise today, much truth is heard that does not grip and change lives. It is a solemn thought that, having heard the truth and recognized the diyine authority in which it has been uttered, the hearer becomes guilty be fore God if he refuges to obey. While the Lord Jesus taught, a de monized man cried out in the syna gogue. We should notice the dual personality in this man; referring to himself, he used both singular and plural pronouns. “Let us alone,” he cried. This is always Satan’s desire. He and all. his evil host would like to be free, .if they could be, from in terference from the Lord Jesus Christ. The demon, indwelling the man, knew Jesus for what He was, “the Holy One of God.” Here is an illustration of the fact that mere intellectual assent is not enough for salvation. The de mons believe and tremble; the angels believe and rejoice; all in heaven and in hell believe; infidels are found only on the earth! The word of command from the Lord Jesus was instantly obeyed. The demon came out of the man, and the people “werd* all amazed.” But they would not accept His teaching, and to them this divine deliverance was only some strange thing to be gos siped about in Galilee. ,How blind they were! II. I n P eter ’ s H ome (29-31) . Peter and Andrew evidently lived together, and their partners, J a m e s and John, seem to have had the free dom. of their home. Jesus and these disciples left the synagogue and went into the home where they found Peter’s wife’s mother sick of a fever. Without demanding anything, or ad vising Him what to do, they simply told Jesus o f the case and then left the. matter in His hands. Jesus took the woman by the hand and lifted her up, and the healing was immediate and complete. ' Even the weakness always*, resulting from fever was not apparent, for she “min istered unto them.”” In this simple record there is an entire absence of the spectacular but a manifestation of divine goodness and of power. The simplicity of .this unadorned record

disciples, He said, “Come ye after me, and I will make you to become'fish ers of men” (Mk. 1:17). I brought two magnets with me to help teach us what Jesus meant. This black mag net has two nails hanging frorh it. It reminds us of Satan and his power. He often uses people to help hold others under his power. This large white magnet reminds us of Christ and His power. It has a large nail hanging from it. We will let this nail represent Peter and An drew to whom Jesus said, "Come ye after me, and I will make you to be come fishers of men.” Jesus is al ways wanting Christians to help draw others to Him. This nail on the white magnet is moving toward the nail held* by the black magnet. Look, the little nail is frying to get away from the nail on the w h i t e magnet. [Attempt to put the points of the nails together. Both being connect ed with the same poles of the mag nets, they will r&pel each other.] There is just one way for this large nail to catch the small one, and that is by getting close to its heart. f[Move the point of^the large nail about half way up the side of the small nail, and they will be attracted to each other.] Now the drawing power of the white magnet causes the nail to be dif ferent. [Move the magnets .closer together, and the small'nail will get closer to the white magnet. Soon it will break loose and jump to the white magnet.] Those who faithful ly follow Christ will be taught by Him to fish for others. 31 And he came and took her by the hand, and lifted her up; and immediately the fever left her, and she m inistered unto them. 32 And at even, when the sun did set, they brought unto him all that were diseased, and them that were possessed with devils. 33 And all the city was gathered to gether at the door. 34 And he healed many that w ere sick o f divers diseases, and cast *out many devils; and suffered not the devils to speak, because they knew him. N LESSON T E X T : Mk. 1:21-34. ■j GOLDEN T E X T : “ I was in the Spirit 'on the Lord’s day” (R ev. 1:10). DEVOTIONAL READING: Iqa. 58:13, 14. Outline and Exposition I. I n the S ynagogue (21-28) T T T HEREVER He was, Jesus \ / \ / made it a habit to attend Y V the synagogue services. At the time of our l e s s o n today, His teaching in the synagogue aston ished the hearers because He spoke

was God, and could do miracles? Any way, when Peter saw the draught of fishes, he knew that Jesus was God, and he fell down and worshiped Him. . Jesus said to Peter, “From henceforth thou shalt catch men.” And Peter forsook all and followed Jesus. Woulcf you like to be a fisherman, too? If you will follow the L o r d Jesus, He will show you how to “fish” for people—how to win others to Him.

Object Lesson F ollowing and F ishing

OBJECTS: Two rpagnets and three nails. (One magnet should be larger and stronger than the other. Wrap white paper around the large one, and black paper around the .other. Two of the nails should be large, and one small. Put one of the large nails on one' prong of each magnet. Use the prongs which are not attracted to each other. The heads of the nails should be flat against the magnets. Sus pend the small nail, head up, from the point of the nail on the b l a c k magnet.) LESSON: When the Lord Jesus ealled Simon and Andrew to be His Mark ls21 And they went Into Caper- naumt and straightw ay on the sabbath day he entered into the synagogue, and taught. 22 And they w ere astonished at his doctrine: for he taught them as one that had authority, and not as the scribes. 23 And there was in their synagogue a man with an unclean spirit: and he cried out, 24 Saying, Let us alone; what have we to do with thee, thou Jesus o f Naza reth? art thou com e to destroy us? I know thee who thou art, the H oly One o f God. 25. And Jesus rebuked him, saying. Hold thy peace, ami com e out o f him. 26 And when the unclean spirit had torn nim, and cried w ith a loud voice, he cam e out o f him. 27 And they w ere all amazed, inso much that they questioned am ong them selves, sa y in g,'W h a t thing is this? what new doctrine is this? fo r with authority commandeth he even the unclean spirits, and they d o-obey him. 28 And immediately his fame spread' abroad throughou t all the region round about Galilee. 20 And forthw ith, when they were come out o f the synagogue, they entered into the house o f Simon and Andrew, with James and John. 30 But Simon’s w ife’s mother lay sick o f a fev er; and anon they tell him o f her.
