Unforgettable Characters by Dr. Lloyd T. Anderson
THE VIRGIN MARY The virgin birth of Christ is a unique biological miracle. It is a foundation stone of our faith, and clearly taught in the Word of Cod. Adam and Abraham had been giv en promises of a great Deliverer (Genesis 3:15, 12:3). God's Son would come from Abraham's seed, through David. Only through a woman with a proper ancestry could these promises ever be ful filled (Isaiah 7:14). We read pro phetically, “Behold a virgin shall conceive." It is interesting to no tice that the Hebrew states "the" virgin pointing to a specific indi vidual. While we have no record of the name of Mary's mother yet her father's name was Heli (Luke 3:23. We know very little about Mary
before she was chosen to be the virgin of promise. The many myths which have been invented about her are absolutely absurd. She cer tainly was not supernatural but she was used as an instrument in the hand of Almighty God to bring His supernatural Son into the world. She lived in the wicked city of Naz areth of Galilee where she was en gaged to a man named Joseph who was of the house of David (Luke 1:26-27). She was a virtuous Jew ish girl who anticipated the final marriage vows and the responsi bility of being a wife and a mother in Israel. The angel said, "Hail, thou that art highly favoured." "Highly favoured" means one who has received an abundance of grace from God. It is in error to assume that Mary was the source of grace.
