The University of Johannesburg (UJ) held its Annual General Meeting (AGM) of the Convocation last month. Giving the welcome address was the President of UJ’s Executive Committee, Prof Leslie Mpunzi. He gave a synopsis of the meeting’s agenda and said the meeting was in accordance with UJ’s statute. “Please be reminded that this meeting and its procedures are in accordance with the university statute, the constitution of the convocation as well as the university’s rules for effective meetings,” said Prof Mpunzi. He said participating in the AGM of the convocation was important as it provided first-hand information about the strategic direction of the institution and other develop- mental issues. “We therefore need your support as alumni in the mentorship of our students.” Vice-Chancellor and Principal of UJ, Prof Letlhokwa Mpedi, gave the keynote address for the evening. He said, “We are drawing to the end of what has been an eventful year in the history of UJ. Although not an institution to shy away from change, we’ve certainly had to embrace a lot of change in a short space of time.” He added that though the institution had weathered this period masterfully, it also begged the university to take stock of the year that had been. “This year has brought with it great excitement and possibilities. It marked a new chapter for UJ and for me. My story, like many of yours, is inextricably linked to this great institution. I know all too well the importance of an institution that emphasises access and excellence.”
It must be noted that because the gathering reached over 200 viewers on three platform – MS Teams, YouTube and LinkedIn – the Convocation AGM was quorate. Prof Mpedi said UJ’s history was rich and represented a long legacy that all were now a part of. “UJ is a unique institution. We have shown on a number of occasions that access and excellence are not mutually exclusive. Secondly, we are in the top five and at the same time are accessible. We are a unique institution. This serves as a microcosm of our society and presents an almost unprecedented hope of a new tomorrow,” said Prof Mpedi. He said many of the inequalities in South Africa presented themselves here as many of the university’s students were first-generation, with many having emerged from lower quintile 1 and 2 schools, impacted by the digital divide. “Our student body is a true representation of the demographics of our country and our understanding of our complexities on the country’s dynamics is based on our very own experience. We are a university of possibilities that demonstrate the transformative power of education,” added Prof Mpedi. The question-and-answer session was facilitated by the Senior Manager for the Alumni Office, Mr Nell Ledwaba.
