“You can think of yourself as being made up of organs, which are made up of cells. A holon is something

He said there were researchers working within the field within his department. Some are his students but most are those of Prof Dustin van der Haar who is currently in the US on a Fulbright Scholarship Fellowship programme. “Mrs Margaux Bowditch is one of Prof Van der Haar’s students working in our department, finishing up her PhD. She’s looking into technologies for ballet pose estimation, allowing the system to understand different ballet poses and provide feedback on how well someone is doing through various movements within ballet.” Mr Tevin Moodley is wrapping up his PhD as well. He’s doing similar work, analysing aspects of cricket videos, such as people’s swings to provide them with better feedback on how well they are batting, for example. Another researcher in the department is Michelle Cullinan who is doing more fundamental, basic research into the nature of creating distributed artificial intelligent systems in such a way that they are recursively composed of other versions of those same systems. Systems that exhibit such properties are known as holonic systems, said Prof Coulter.

that can exist in its own right and

simultaneously be an entity existing within the context of a larger entity,” he explained. On how Artificial Intelligence has changed and shifted our lives, Prof Coulter said it had been both useful and disruptive. “You can think of these generative AIs as things that capture the underlying patterns that exist in a large corpus of data – it could be text or images and you can use them to produce examples that have similar structures and patterns to those within the corpus without actually being in the data. Modern Large Language Model based AIs can also assist with document comprehension and combating the information/complexity explosion of the modern world in that they can summarise, explain and assist in deriving insight,” he said.
