Lethiwe Nzama wants to see her students become the best versions of themselves. She says that teaching is her opportunity to impact students and society. more than just accounting. In class, I advocate for a great student experience. I want my students to know that it’s not only about books, but also about wellbeing and the skills they need when entering the work environment after completing their studies.” She firmly believes that students should be seen and treated as human beings rather than mere statistics or numbers. “I believe in making them feel comfortable and creating an environment where learning can take place. Our future needs to be guided by taking care of our young generation. Young people must be positively impacted to develop, be seen, and be recognised. that time, I hope to have written a book with life lessons for young, upcoming academics and postgraduate students who are not yet sure of where their future lies. It will centre on how to carry yourself when entering academia and what will be expected of them there.” Leadership is essential. “Leadership makes people grow and perform well.” Ms Lulama Boyce, head of UJ‘s Department of Commercial Accounting, stands out as a leader who made a difference that led directly to her recognition as the 2022 Educator of the Year, Lethiwe says. “She allowed me to be myself and always approved my initiatives as they were intended to benefit the students. Her support played a crucial role in my development as an educator, as I do not like to be boxed.”

Lethiwe’s best advice for her students is to be open-minded, take opportunities, and be honest people. “Always remain accountable for your actions. Evolve, do not be stagnant. Embrace technology and keep on learning because the times are moving fast.” Lethiwe Nzama recently completed her PhD in Auditing from UJ (graduated in March 2023) and holds the following qualifications from UJ: MCom in Computer Auditing (2015); BCom Hons in Auditing (2012); Postgraduate Diploma in Business Management (2011); Bridging Certificate in Theory of Accounting (2008); National Diploma Cost and Management Accounting (cum laude) (2006). She also qualified as a Certified Internal Auditor (CIA) from the Institute of Internal Auditors, Global USA, in 2017.
