the poor fellow had gone to pick up odd jobs while waiting for his ship to return), and when he woke up the birds had flown after having ex changed clothing. It surely was God’s opportune time to get at the heart of poor John and, with an inward and upward cry, we talked to that man in the plainest speech we could command. He took it all like a whipped boy, and as we went over God’s simple, unincumbered plan of salvation, all the fight was gone out of “ John” and he came through clean and clear and sweet. Now he was per fectly willing to Join us at the Club, where he made his first open confes sion of the Lord Jesus Christ) as his own personal Saviour. We had him all fixed up in new clothes, inside as well as out. That night he returned to Biola Hall to sleep, and the following morning in answer to prayer he secured a position at San Diego. Just the very line of work he was looking for in exchange for his sea faring one. Isn’t it just wonderful to watch God work? As John handed over to us the little sil ver cross attached to the string of prayer beads the dying mother had placed in his hand, he said, “ You know I won’t need these now; I’ve some thing much better within my-heart. But, for mother’s memory, you put them away for me:” And, looking up in our face with tears glistening in his eyes, he said, “ And why . didn’t the priest tell me long ago that Jesus paid it all on the cross?” All that day as he. pored over the very first copy,)of a Bible he had ever seen he would ask, “ And is there no Mass in the Bible? No penance? No purgatory? No praying to saints? No praying for the dead? No holy days or human merit at all?” "No, John,” was the answer; “ all' the doing has been done. You’ll not find the things of which yon speak in the Book; but here’s a little verse you can take with you. You’ll not find it in just these words in your Bible, but it’s true never-the-leas: • “ ‘I cannot work my soul to save, For this my Lord has done; But I can work like any slave For love of His dear Son.’ ” H SEAM EN ’S D E PA R TM EN T Claude H. Pearson, Supt.— Our W orkers hoard all vessels in the port o f San Pedro, holding Coepel Services and Distributing Literature. “ L ooking unto Jesus the author and finisher o f our faith.’ ’ Hah. 12:2. ]S we begin another year our hopes, our ambitions, our plans are made with a view of looking unto Jesus. Each month causes us to realize that we are nearer home, and that each vessel entering our port carries a human cargo bound for eternity. May we grasp every opportunity to witness for our Lord.

John took us up on this proposition and that night became our guest, leav ing in the morning after expressing his appreciation. One of our favorite slogans at the Hall is, “ Contact is op portunity, and opportunity is responsi bility.” So, true to our motto, we tackled John regarding eternal reali ties before he turned in for the night. We learned the lad had Just re turned from Frisco, where'he had laid his dear oid mother’s . body in the grave, but although John had just come through an experience which might make most men pause and think, we discovered him cold, hard and skeptical. For, alas, his contact with religious people had forced him to believe they were all fakes, and that religion was so commercialized , he wanted nothing to do with it. Our invitation to the Fishermen’s Club was turned down flatly, so we simply bore testimony to the saving power of the Lord Jesus Christ, while at the same time endeavoring to show him something of the kindness of the Lord, in looking after his present needs. He willingly accepted a copy of John’s Gospel, and we committed the “ bread cast upon the. waters” to God. i„, • Just one week later to the day John came in-ifgain, but this time he “ crept” in— to better describe his entrance. But, oh, what a contrast to the John of a week before! Gone were all his “ glad clotheB.” They had been ex changed for filthy rags. He .surely looked, as he sobbingly told us, as though he had fallen among thieves, who had stripped him and left him half dead. They had plied him with cheap booze, dragged him to a cheap rooming house at San Pedro (where
