extent; before the train pulled out of the city, bearing them away through the sandy desert to the port of Mollendo, missiles were hurled at them, one causing an ugly wound on Randall’s forehead. Otherwise they were unharmed, and once more they gave thanks for their deliverance. Arriving at Mollendo, they were soon on board the steamer, and then on their way to Callao, the seaport of Lima. Three days found them again traveling through familiar scenes, and looking forward with pleasure to seeing their old missionary friends. As they drew near to the home of Mr. and Mrs. Freeman, they remembered it was a flat ,on the second story and consisted of three rooms, one back of the other. On the roof, which was of mud and per fectly flat, a chicken fence had been constructed and here Mr. Freeman kept chickens and pigeons. There is never any rain on the dry sandy coast, so that mud houses and mud roofs are quite common and inexpensive. Passing through the streets of Lima, they came at last to the missionaries’ home, and were admitted. Mrs. Freeman met them at the door, and voiced her surprise at seeing them so soon. They had rather expected it would be at least a week later before they could arrive. “ But," said Mrs. Freeman, with a sudden twinkle in her eyes, "did you get the news in our last letter? I don’t believe you could have received it.” “ No, Mrs. Freeman,” replied William, “ it has been more than a month since we have heard anything from you.” "You have not heard then that three new workers have arrived, and are already busy at work with Mr. Freeman in conducting a school for children?” “ No! fine! You will be making great progress with your work now. How soon will Mr. Freeman be back from the school work? Shall we walk down there, Randall? And is it in the same old place? Or perhaps we had better secure rooms first and get settled. Do you know of any rooms near that we could get?” William felt decidedly puzzled at Mrs. Freeman’s man ner. She seemed so mysterious, as if the possessor of some great secret. “ You haven’t asked me who the new workers were,” she reminded him. “ Why no, Mrs. Freeman; are they any one we know?” he said, decidedly puzzled. “ I think you have met one of them. In fact, I know you have, for she spoke of having known both of you.” “ Who is it, Mrs. Freeman?” inquired Randall. But Mrs. Freeman shook her head laughingly, and said she had decided to wait until they saw her, and then they could tell whether they had ever met her before. She told them of near-by rooms that she thought they could get, and after these were secured and arrangements made for their baggage to be brought in, the two friends sought the school that they might see Mr. Freeman and the newcomers. “ Who do you think it could be?” asked Randall. “ I cannot think who it could be,” puzzled William. CHAPTER 17 RANDALL'S DEATH HEN the two young men reached the chapel-like school room, Mr. Freeman, surprised as was his wife at their early arrival, came out to greet them. The pupils had just been dismissed. The new mis sionaries were setting the room to rights, and did not glance
