WESLEY’S RULES The following most important rules Mr. Bramwell par ticularly regarded; they were the guides of his conduct, yet always in subordination to the Holy Scriptures. He viewed them indeed as an exposition of several Scriptural direc tions; and valued them highly, on account of their salutary consequences: “Be diligent. Never be unemployed. Never while away ’time, nor spend more time at any place than is strictly necessary. "Be serious. Let your motto be, Holiness to the Lord. Avoid all lightness, jesting, and foolish talking. “Believe evil of no one unless fully proved; take heed how you credit it. “ Put the best construction you can on everything. You know the judge is always supposed to be on the prisoner’s side. ‘Speak evil of no one; else your word especially would eat, as doth a canker.’ Keep your thoughts within your own breast, till you come to the person concerned. “Tell every one what you think wfbng in him, lovingly and plainly and as soon as may be, else it will fester in your own heart. Make all haste to cast the fire out of your bosom. ‘•'Do not affect the gentleman. A preacher of the Gospel is the servant of all. “You have nothing to do but to save souls, therefore spend and be spent in this work. And go always not only to those who want you but to those who want you most. “Act in all things, not according to your own will, but as a son in the Gospel, and in union with your brethren. As such it is your part to employ your time as our rules direct, partly, in-preaching and visiting from house to house; partly in reading, meditation, and prayer. “Observe; it is not your business to preach so many times, and to take care of this or that society; but to save as many souls as you can; to bring as many sinners to repentance and with all your power to build them up in that holiness, without which they cannot see the Lord.” Early rising was also a point on which Mr. Wesley uni formly insisted. — (From the life of ffm . Bramwell, one of Wesley’s preachers.) Jlfc. jN-fe. liiii “ CHEATING THE DOWGS” A very interesting story, telling how at one time even the dogs kept the Scotch Sabbath, is given by a Scottish author. In pastoral parts of the country it was, it appears, an estab lished practice for each shepherd to take hip faithful collie dog to church. These dogs, it seems, sat out the Gaelic ser vices and sermons with commendable patience, until, towards the end of the last Psalm, they would yawn and stretch in preparation to scamper out of the church. On .one occasion, however, the. congregation of .one of these churches determined that' the service should close in a more decorous rhanner. Accordingly, when a stranger clergyman was officiating, he found the people all sitting When about to pronounce the departing 'blessing. Hesitating at what he saw, he paused, expecting the congregation to rise, when an old shepherd, seeing the situation, rose, and. said, “Say ‘awa\ sir; we’re a-sittin’ to cheat the dowgs.” “ D E F E N D T H E F A I T H ! ” “ I * * ’ exhort you that yo should earnestly contend for the faith which was on ca delivered unto the saints.” Jude 3.
