Benches and splashbacks Section Summary Benches and splashbacks need to be monolithic surfaces where possible. They need to be easy to clean and easily repaired or replaced. Benches and Splashbacks Considerations Checklist: • Benchtops to be a solid surface such as reconstituted stone (Evostone , Mirostone or similar approved). No silica-based products. • Preference is for sheet or large format tiled splashbacks due to ease of repair and the cleaning and robustness.
Kitchen designs and layouts should be in proportion with and adequate for the size of the dwelling. Consideration to the durability, life cycle, maintenance and cleaning needs to prioritised in the material selection and detailing of kitchens. Kitchen Considerations Checklist: • All benches to be a minimum of 600mm deep. • Ensure a minimum of 300mm bench to either side of a cooktop or sink and immediately adjacent to a wall oven. • Allow for one primary bench space, minimum of 800mm in length. • Allow for a 750mm wide x 700mm deep space for a fridge. Consider fridge door swing in space planning to minimise impact on circulation paths and kitchen functionality. • Over bench cupboards should be maximised. • The maximum height of kitchen cupboards should be 2100mm AFFL. Cupboard zones should be finished to the ceiling with a bulkhead. • A window within the kitchen is a valuable attribute, locate over the sink where possible.
• Limit caulking and grout lines as much as possible. • Splashbacks should be a minimum of 600mm high. • All benches to be 900mm AFFL.
Benches and Splashbacks Considerations Checklist: • Refer to NDIS SDA Design Standard. • Kitchen joinery needs to be flexible and to ensure joinery can be cost- effectively modified in the future to meet the needs of residents with a disability.
