○ have a suitably deep layer of growing substrate to support a variety of plant types and provide a high level of amenity. ○ be readily accessible to the intended users. • Any proposed podium/rooftop trees are to have a suitable growing substrate (including depth of soil) to support growth, health and the intended functional performance (including size, canopy and amenity) of the tree at maturity. • Podium structures are to have a suitable load-bearing capacity to support the intended use, as well as the weight at maturity of plants and soil when saturated. • Containers for planting are to be suitably waterproofed and drained, include root barriers, and to be watered by an automated irrigation system or as approved. • Drainage systems must be suitable for the roof construction and catchment area. • The Podium/roof-top gardens and green facade must be able to be readily maintained by the person and/or organisation responsible for maintenance. • Any proposed rooftop gardens shall be designed to minimise maintenance requirements. SDA Rooftop Gardens Considerations Checklist: • Refer to NDIS SDA Design Standard. • Consideration given to the provision of raised garden beds • Consideration given to the accessibility of fixed features of rooftop gardens (eg. fixed furniture, clothesline, BBQ etc). • Rooftop areas allow for placement of furniture, and other movable objects, and simultaneously maintains adequate space for circulation of mobility aids.

High Density Landscaping Considerations Checklist: • Consider provision of communal clothes drying facility for residents. • Cluster public and communal furniture and fixtures where possible. • Provide both shaded and unshaded seating options to encourage people outdoors in both warmer and cooler weather. • Some seating shall have backrests and armrests. Low Density Landscaping Considerations Checklist: • Make provision for outside clotheslines appropriate to the size of the dwelling located such that it receives direct sunlight (minimum of 2500mm wide and 4 lines deep). • Ensure that there is appropriate pedestrian access to the line (nom. 1000mm wide path). • Front and back yards to have external cold water taps. • Storage shed to be provided to all standalone dwellings minimum size to be 2.25m (w) x 0.78m (d) .

Rooftop gardens Section Summary

Trafficable podium/rooftop gardens (or green roofs) are to be functional and to have high quality design. The inclusion of trafficable podium/ rooftop gardens is encouraged from both a community and sustainability perspective and should be incorporated where the budget permits.
