Climate Change and Outdoor Recreation in the Great Lakes: A Literature Review
Conservation and Community Planning Dylan Cariveau
Climate change is impacting the tourism and outdoor recreation industry throughout the Great Lakes Region because of its close ties to the environment. Understanding the potential impacts of a changing climate as well as key knowledge gaps allows stakeholders to make more informed decisions and helps guide future research. The goal of this project is to better understand the current literature on climate change and outdoor recreation in the Great Lakes Region, with a focus on identifying common themes and gaps in research. To do this, I worked with the Wisconsin Initiative on Climate Change Impacts (WICCI) to conduct a standardized literature review using the WebOfScience database, where over 200 papers were collected. Searches were based off geographical and recreational variables, such as Wisconsin or Downhill Skiing. Papers were then counted based on these variables and coded based upon their recommended climate strategy (mitigation vs. adaptation). Lastly, papers were analyzed for common themes across region and recreation type. The results of this study are meant to help outdoor recreation stakeholders throughout the Midwest better understand potential climate impacts and identify common strategies for climate mitigation and adaption. Additionally, we hope to guide future research by identifying knowledge gaps and vulnerable recreation pursuits.
