The Birds of Schmeeckle Reserve: A Multi-Year Survey

Ecosystem Restoration and Management Raymond Miller

Schmeeckle Reserve is a 280-acre natural area on the campus of the University of Wisconsin – Stevens Point. It contains a variety of different habitat types, including forests, wetlands and savannas, and is the site of an active ecosystem restoration project. For this project, I conducted 510 days of bird surveys over a six year period in Schmeeckle, and documented each species I encountered, as well as number of individuals of each species present. I also recorded any evidence of breeding each species exhibited. From this data, I have created a checklist of all of the bird species which occur in the reserve, including seasonality and abundance. This work should help visualize what bird species use the habitats in Schmeeckle and at what times of year, to help inform future management of the site.
