Ruffed grouse ( Bonasa umbellus ) are an important game bird species in the Great Lakes region. As part of the UW-Stevens Point Wildlife Society Chapter, our undergraduate research project has conducted ruffed grouse drumming surveys since 2014 on the Treehaven property in Tomahawk, WI. Using ten years of detection data, we will build multi-season occupancy models to estimate occupancy, local colonization and extinction, and detection probability in relation to forest management history. This information will be used to support management decisions and professional training at the Treehaven habitat demonstration sites, which will help inform current and future wildlife managers across the Midwest.
